Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has issued a passionate and strongly worded condemnation of the relentless and senseless attacks that continue to plague communities across Benue State. Reacting to the increasing spate of killings, he warned that the persistent failure of both federal and state authorities to decisively address the situation may leave affected communities with no other choice but to take up arms in self-defence.

In a statement released on Monday through his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark described the continuing violence as a grave injustice against the people of Benue, branding the killings as utterly barbaric, shockingly inhumane, and wholly unacceptable in any civilized society. He expressed frustration and dismay at what he termed the government’s inability—or unwillingness—to bring an end to what he called a “slow-moving war” being waged against innocent and unarmed civilians.

“This is a deeply troubling situation,” he said. “It is no longer something we can overlook. The authorities cannot continue to stand by in silence whileour people are being hunted and slaughtered in their ancestral homes. If this tragic pattern continues unchecked, communities may be forced to protect themselves, as the government appears either overwhelmed or indifferent.”

Senator Mark emphasized that the primary duty of any responsible government is to ensure the safety and protection of its citizens. According to him, any prolonged silence or lack of tangible response from the authorities not only undermines public trust but also gives the impression of complicity or gross negligence. He warned that such a breakdown in trust represents a dangerous erosion of the social contract between the government and the governed.

The former Senate President therefore urged the Federal Government to rise to the occasion and fulfill its constitutional mandate by deploying immediate and effective strategies to put an end to the bloodshed. He called for the full mobilization of national security forces to troubled areas in Benue and insisted that no effort should be spared in restoring peace and stability.

He also specifically appealed to Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State to intensify local security efforts and ensure that state security agencies work closely with their federal counterparts to strengthen surveillance, increase response times, and build resilience in vulnerable communities.

Furthermore, Senator Mark called on traditional rulers, local chiefs, and community-based vigilante groups to play an active role by collaborating with law enforcement and sharing timely intelligence that could prevent future attacks. He stressed that community unity and cooperation were vital to curbing the menace and reclaiming peace.

Expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with the people of Benue, Senator Mark acknowledged the pain, trauma, and grief that many families are enduring, but urged the public not to allow despair or anger to sow division among them.

“This is an incredibly painful and trying period for our state,” he said. “But we must not let fear or hatred tear us apart. Instead, we must stand together, support one another, and collectively reject this wave of violence. We must remain alert, cooperate with lawful authorities, and pursue peace through legal and constructive means. Together, we can overcome this dark moment.
