…Urges social media influencers, bloggers to communicate responsibly

The Director General, Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe Esq, has said that the days of cyberstalking and bulling are over in Nigeria.

He advised social media influencers, Tiktokers, content creators and new media practitioners to be well guided by subsisting laws regulating the cyber space in the country, so as not to fish in troubled waters, pointing out that ignorance is not an excuse in law.

The Bureau Chief who was a guest of Rize FM Radio Warri on Saturday, and at another similar media engagement, stated that the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, which was reenacted in 2024 is the primary law in Nigeria, for combating online fraud and cybercrime, aiming to protect individuals and Critical National Information Infrastructure by establishing a legal framework for the investigation, prosecution, and prevention of cyber-related offenses.

Dr Oghenesivbe, who is also a Barrister at Law, and Minister in the Temple of Justice, said the Cybercrimes Act of 2024 addresses crimes like cyberstalking, fraud, unauthorized access to computer systems, and identity theft, and it was enacted to provide a comprehensive response to the growing issues of cybercrime in the country.

He assured that the 6th edition of the Delta Strategic Communication communication Workshop (DELCOM 2025) with the Theme “Strategic communication in the Digital Age: Leveraging on Artificial Intelligence for Effective Leadership” would dwell extensively on the Cybercrimes Act, Libel, Defamation, and the deployment of Artificial Intelligence, digital tools for effective media engagements and information dissemination across multifaceted platforms.

Oghenesivbe commended Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, for his visionary and pragmatic leadership which has upscaled the state’s economic growth, infrastructure and human capacity development.

He said governor Oborevwori will on Monday 6th October declare open DELCOM 2025, assuring that the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor, APC Delta Chapter Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, Secretary to Delta State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, Delta Head of Service, Dr Mrs Mininim Oseji, Chief of Staff to Delta Governor, Hon Prince Johnson Erijo, Chief Adviser to Delta Governor, Senator Chief Ighoyota Amori, PhD, and other senior government officials will attend the opening ceremony.

“Cyber stalking and bulling can no longer thrive in Nigeria. It’s no longer business as usual. The cybercrimes Act of 2024 is in force, and ignorance is not a defense.

“Delcom 2025 will discuss legal issues around the cybercrimes Act, Libel, Defamation, and other subsisting laws, so as to better equip participants in the discharge of their assigned responsibilities,” Oghenesivbe said.
