Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has reiterated his unwavering commitment to the growth of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme and youth empowerment initiatives aimed at equipping young Nigerians with the skills and values necessary for national development.
He gave the assurance during the official opening and swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku.
Oborevwori, who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr. ThankGod Trakiriowei, described the NYSC as a noble scheme that has significantly promoted unity, integration, and development across Nigeria for over five decades.
Speaking further, he said, “Your deployment to Delta State is not by accident. Consider yourselves, for this period, Deltans and partners in our collective efforts to build a safer, stronger and more prosperous State.
‘’As a government, we deeply value the NYSC and remain committed to youth empowerment. We acknowledge some of the challenges affecting the Scheme, such as corps member rejection and infrastructural gaps in orientation camps. Let me assure you that these issues are being addressed with seriousness and urgency’’ he stated.
The Governor urged the corps members to approach their service year with diligence, empathy and a strong sense of purpose, and to leave lasting, positive impacts in their host communities.
He encouraged the corps members to take full advantage of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, NYSC Ventures, and other initiatives aimed at promoting self-reliance and reducing youth unemployment.
In his welcome address, NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. John Kwaghe, revealed that a total of 1,374 prospective corps members had been registered for the three-week orientation programme, which he said, was carefully designed to instil in them the ideals and objectives of the scheme.
He encouraged them to see their deployment to the state as a golden opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the youth friendly policies and developmental programmes of the state government.
He praised the Delta State Government for its continued support, especially in improving camp facilities, but also raised concerns over the recent vandalization of electrical installations at the camp, which he noted had disrupted operations.
