Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has identified technical and vocational education as a powerful solution to youth unemployment, noting that beneficiaries would graduate as skilled professionals, entrepreneurs and job creators rather than dependents on white-collar employment.
The governor made this known on Monday while commissioning the newly completed Model Technical College in Omadino, Warri South Local Government Area, describing the institution as a flagship project and a major investment in technical and vocational education under his administration.
He stated that some accomplishments speak louder when seen than when explained, stressing that within two years, his government had executed landmark projects without borrowing funds or placing additional financial pressure on the people of Delta State.
According to him, the completion of the college clearly demonstrated prudent financial management, as contractors were paid promptly, ensuring the timely delivery of the project.
Governor Oborevwori revealed that academic activities had already commenced at the college prior to its official commissioning, a move he said underscored the institution’s preparedness and operational readiness.
He described the Omadino Model Technical College as another significant stride in strengthening technical and vocational education in the state, noting that the facility reflected purposeful leadership, careful planning and disciplined implementation.
Highlighting the quality of infrastructure, the governor pointed to the internal road network, administrative offices, classrooms, workshops and laboratories as evidence of his administration’s commitment to delivering standard educational facilities.
He commended former Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for initiating the project and noted that his administration ensured its completion in line with approved standards.
Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, Oborevwori said the college stood as a solid and impressive structure, worthy of pride for students, lecturers and staff, while giving glory to God for the successful completion.
The governor also applauded the quality of instruction at the institution, citing the confidence and eloquence displayed by a student speaker at the event as proof of effective teaching and learning.
He emphasized that modern educational infrastructure was vital to creating a conducive learning environment, improving academic performance, boosting teacher productivity and instilling pride within the school community.
“With the standard of facilities provided here, I am confident that students of this college can compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world. The workshops and laboratories are fully equipped with modern facilities,” he said.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to education under the MORE Agenda, Oborevwori assured residents that the state government would continue upgrading educational infrastructure to guarantee access to functional education and globally relevant skills.
However, he urged the school management, staff, students and host communities to safeguard and maintain the facilities, stressing that public assets belong to the people and must be protected from vandalism and neglect.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, described the Omadino Model Technical College as more than a modern technical institution, calling it a clear statement of purpose and a symbol of transformation.
He disclosed that the school is equipped with 12 classrooms and nine fully functional workshops designed to promote effective learning and skills acquisition. Residential and welfare facilities include two hostels, staff quarters, a principal’s residence and a corps members’ lodge, all aimed at ensuring comfort for students and staff.
Additional facilities include a dining hall, clinic and a large multipurpose hall, as well as recreational amenities such as a football field and basketball court. Supporting infrastructure like a generator house and operational quarters further enhance the institution’s readiness for academic and administrative activities.
Ufoh revealed that academic sessions began in September 2025 with the admission of Junior Technical One students, explaining that the decision was taken to prevent the sophisticated facilities from remaining idle. He added that the response from the Omadino community and neighbouring areas had been overwhelming.
Also speaking, the Olu of Warri, His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, thanked Governor Oborevwori for his attention to the development of riverine communities and called for sustained investment in schools, roads, bridges and jetties in riverine areas.
On behalf of the students, Miss Courtney Omotoyine described the commissioning as the realization of a long-awaited dream and a significant step toward securing the future of youths in Delta State and Nigeria. She urged students to make responsible use of the facilities and strive for excellence.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbegbaku; Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon.
