The National Deputy Chairman (Diaspora Engagement) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and senatorial candidate for Delta North in the 2023 general election, Hon. Dr. Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, has totally condemned the defection of the member representing Ijumu/Kabba-Bunu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Salman Idris from ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gbandi made this known in a press release made available to The Hill Nigeria.
He likened Idris defection to Judas Iscariot, stating that he had betrayed the Party and electorates who in confidence of his effective representation gave him their votes under the flagship of ADC during the general election, for his personal gain.
While describing Idris action as a stark act of political dishonesty, Gbandi called that he resigns, contest again under the platform of APC and be strip off his title as ‘honorable’ as he had failed the people of his constituency and the public who entrusted so much confidence in him.
In a powerful message to the media, Gbandi announced that Salman Idris’ name has been added to a growing list of political turncoats who should be removed from office. He called for a robust recall initiative led by ADC Youths and the ADC Diaspora Network, in collaboration with the people of goodwill in Kogi State, to ensure that Idris is held accountable for his actions. This recall initiative, he said is not just about one politician but about sending a clear message that such betrayals will not be tolerated.
He harped on the need for political accountability, integrity and a broader struggle for the soul of Nigerian democracy, Gbandi said he and his supporters will mobilize to reclaim the mandate given to the ADC, adding that the political landscape must be cleansed of those who treat public office as a mere stepping stone for personal advancement at the expense of the electorate’s trust.
While calling on the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen to declare Idris’ seat vacant, he said failure to do that, will amount to his setting a dangerous precedent that could encourage further political betrayals and undermine the stability of party politics in Nigeria and also placing the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy is under threat.
