The Member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, has passionately appealed to her supporters to remain calm and law-abiding following the violence that marred the All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government Congress in Ethiope West on Saturday.
What was expected to be a routine party exercise turned chaotic after armed thugs reportedly stormed the venue, leaving several persons injured and heightening tensions within the party. The congress, initially scheduled to hold at Oghara Township Stadium, was abruptly relocated to Ovade in Ethiope West Local Government Area — a move that reportedly caused confusion among party faithful.
Tension escalated upon the arrival of Hon. Ibori-Suenu at the new venue. Eyewitnesses said violence broke out shortly after, with armed men allegedly attacking her supporters using dangerous weapons. In the midst of the disorder, the federal lawmaker was denied access to the congress ground.
Sources close to her camp disclosed that her security team had acted on prior intelligence suggesting threats to her life. It was further gathered that there were fears she could have been attacked if she had proceeded into the venue, prompting her security personnel to swiftly withdraw her from the scene.
Several injured supporters are currently receiving medical attention at undisclosed hospitals.
However, in the aftermath of the disturbing incident, Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s response stood out. Rather than condemning her perceived opponents or calling for retaliation, she addressed her supporters with a message of peace and unity.
She urged them not to allow anger or provocation to push them into violence, emphasizing that political disagreements must never lead to bloodshed. She called on her loyalists and party faithful to remain steadfast, disciplined, and committed to the ideals of the APC, stressing that peace and unity within the party must prevail.
According to her, the strength of the party lies in its ability to resolve differences through dialogue rather than confrontation. She reassured her supporters of her unwavering commitment to their welfare and to the development of Ethiope Federal Constituency.
Observers have described her calm response, despite what her supporters believe was a targeted attack, as a demonstration of leadership and maturity.
