PDP Concerned Youths And Stakeholders Urge Dan Orbih To Step Down Or ….

By Rose Ofolomah

The Chairman, Concerned PDP Youths, Comrade Palson Arusuayine has called for peace amongst the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP).

Arusuayine gave the advice during a peaceful rally, organised by the group in Asaba, Delta State.

He urged Hon. Dan Orbih to step down  as the Party’s  South South Chairman as it has caused chaos amongst party faithful in  the region, particularly in his home state, Edo State.

Orbih said, the only way peace can be restored to the South-South, was for Orbih to vacate the position, adding that failure to step down, they would call on the National Working Committee of the Party to use the powers given to it by NEC k suspend him, until it is proven that he is born again politically.

According to him, Orbih is said to be very distracted, uncoordinated and lack the qualities of a good leader. It was also mentioned that worst still, he is always absent at critical meetings held which is not good for the Party. More irritating is his pronouncement that he will sabotage the PDP 2023 presidential campaign.

He said, “Orbih’s decisions were jeered towards self, his countenance towards the affairs of the Party would bring evil and bad luck if quick actions are not taken and measures put in place”.

The Concerned PDP youths said reverse would be the case if PDP as a Party remains silent about the matter, adding that it was a danger sign and the earlier the matter is contained the better.

Unlike his predecessor, Elder Emma Ogidi who worked tirelessly to bring winnings back to the party while peace and conflicts were resolved, Dan Orbih is the exact opposite as he has felt unconcerned, nonchalant and above all proven to be the black sheep of the party.

Based on the aforementioned, their plea to Orbih who is too busy to take up his responsibilities and ensure winnings for the party come next year, to either quietly step down for the interest of peace or that the NWC of the party should kindly suspend him so the party can have peace.

They however noted that a house divided amongst itself cannot stand so he should allow Elder Emma Ogidi come back to put the house in order and ensure winnings for the party in the South South which is very crucial for the upcoming elections.

Okonji Chides ‘Obi-dients’ For Uncivil Parade In Asaba

BY PATRICK MGBODO

The Oshimili South Local Government Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ogbueshi Dada Okonji, yesterday, reproved supporters of the Labor Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to be courteous in their political parade.

Ogbueshi Okonji’s admonition came on the heels of the procession of Mr. Obi’s supporters in Asaba, which disrupted vehicular traffic and caused inconveniences to motorists and pedestrians of the Delta State capital.

The supporters, had also on Saturday and Monday, used youths numbering less than 500, from neighbouring states to undertake parades and disruption of traffic and other social lives of the citizens in the state capital, Asaba.

Ogbueshi Okonji condemned the uncivil and discourteous approach of the crusaders, known as ‘Obi-dients’, who littered the environment, harassed, extorted motorists and snatched handsets from people, urging them to abide by the tenets of peaceful demonstration and procession.

While he admitted that it was within the political and fundamental rights of Nigerians to associate with any group, Ogbueshi Okonji charged them to see reasons for supporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of the 2023 general elections.

According to Ogbueshi Okonji, only the PDP had the experience, expertise, and structure to reclaim Nigeria from the woes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government maladministration, adding that the party was non-violent and endemic in the state and Oshimili South local government area, in particular.

The PDP chieftain further contended that every true Deltan would support the Presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

He said that Governor Okowa, in the last seven years of his administration, had positively transformed the state with verifiable evidence of good governance in all sectors of communal life.

In addition, Ogbueshi Okonji challenged other political parties to show Nigerians their codified manifestos and blueprints for salvaging Nigeria in the years ahead as the PDP had done.

Ogbueshi Okonji implored the youths and other well-meaning Nigerians to be rational in their deciding their fate and not be swayed by emotions or other petty feelings in their disposition.

Oborevwori Fit To Step Into Governor Okowa’s Shoes – Elekeokwuri

By Patrick Ochei

The member representing Ika North-East Constituency in Delta State House of Assembly and Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Emeka Anthony Elekeokwuri has tipped the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to emerge as the next Governor of Delta State, affirming he is qualified to step into Senator Ifeanyi Okowa’s shoes.

He made this assertion while playing host to members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council 2022 Press Week Committee who had visited to intimate him of their plans towards working with him to achieve a milestone in hosting a successful Press Week where credible and deserving Deltans would be honoured.

The Honourable Member had used the platform of the visit to give an indepth background on the workings of the Legislature in the State, vis-a-vis their working synergy with the Executive Arm of Government that had given the State the needed mileage in achieving enormous growth and development of the various sectors of the State economy.

Elekeokwuri who described Okowa as a great achiever and performer in virtually all the sectors of Delta society, insisted that anybody who must succeed him must have a grasp of the understanding of the complexity of the State as well as being adequately equipped to manage it to success.

Without mincing words, he tipped the Speaker of the State, Oborevwori as best qualified and possessing of the character and credentials to step into the shoes of Governor Okowa to govern the State after him.

He gave his reasons to the effect that apart from efficiently leading the 28 other lawmakers of the State who are representatives of their various Constituencies, Oborevwori had effectively succeeded in becoming the longest serving Speaker in the history of the State.

He averred that not even the most powerful of Speakers in the past could boast of three years as heads of the parliament in the State, but here is a man in Oborevwori’s stature succeeding almost six years as a sitting Speaker.

Elekeokwuri affirmed that such virtue could only be ascribed to an astute administrator and a focused leader with the best understanding of synergy and cordiality of purpose.

His words, “We make laws for peace, order and good governance; others are oversight functions. As the House Committee Chairman on Public Accounts, I can tell you authoritatively that I have done a lot in public accounts transparency. In my close observation, the State has done monumentally well in the development of the state. And that is because, again, there is synergy and cordiality between us and the Executive. We couldn’t have asked for more when we have a Governor who understands the dynamics of the workings of the Legislature.

“It is my desire to partner with the NUJ by bringing my capacity to bear in your Press Week. The State understands the constitutional role you are playing and that is why we commend the State Government for taking up the initiative to erect your Permanent Secretariat. That building is a legacy project for this administration, and I must tell you that we followed up from the budgetary processes; and we are glad it has come to fruition.

“In your Press Week you are going to be speaking about Delta State. That is why I personally want to support your effort, because you have done well in holding Government accountable and promoting its programmes and policies to the people of the State and beyond. However, there are some of you that haven’t done well in terms of proper investigation and information management. While we will hope to see you talking about the progress that Government has made during your Press Week programme, I will like to say that we have achieved a lot in terms of good governance, human capacity development, financial transparency and accountability.

“We have at the level of the Legislature reduced waste; because when that is done, corruption will be reduced and dividends of democracy will go to the people. We have done well in building over 21 bridges across Delta State. Check out all the roads built across the riverine areas, you can’t achieve that without building bridges. The Okowa we know couldn’t have boasted with those necessary projects because other governments are doing so. Don’t forget that Delta State is not a one city State but a multiplicity of cities, where well over six cities exist in it, and you must ensure to retain their city statuses.

“I wish that the next Governor of Delta State will be able to wear the big shoe that Senator Ifeanyi Okowa will leave behind. The person definitely must be well informed about the deep nature and complexity of Delta State.

“Of course, that is why I am rooting for Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori having witnessed how he has successfully managed 28 members from across the State. He has all it takes to lead Delta progressively and better managed from the point Okowa is going to leave it. This is not the time to begin to play clannish politics, we should be interested in where Delta State is heading from here. Mr. Speaker has the capacity, the character and acumen to administer the State, the same way he has successfully been administering the 29 Constituencies of the State”, Elekeokwuri posited.

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of NUJ Delta State Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu had told Elekeokwuri that the Committee members were in his office to brief him about the forthcoming NUJ Press Week.

While hinting him that the union would use the platform to celebrate and honour credible Deltans for their contributions to societal development since the inception of Delta State, he assured him that the Legislature would be carried along when deciding who merits the honour.

Ikeogwu said the Legislature had performed creditably well in contributing to the peace and good governance Deltans are enjoying and, therefore deserves a mention and honour during the Press Week in November 2022.

Council Of Omus Counsels Anioma Politicians Against Electoral Violence

The Anioma Council of Omus has advised politicians of Anioma extraction who are going into the 2023 general elections starting with the Presidential campaign, to play by the rule and avoid engaging themselves in electoral violence, adding that our nature abhors such political tendencies irrespective of the need for power.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Council, Her Royal Majesty Obi Martha Dunkwu (Omu Anioma), the group affirmed that in as much as it would continue to pray for the sons and daughters of Anioma Nation that are embarking on election come 2023, it would be expedient to also advise them against the temptation of wanting to use violence to achieve their desire.

In every position they are vying for, it shall be success for them both for those who will win and those who may not win.

“What we don’t want to be recorded against us in this election is bloodshed. One doesn’t have to kill his or her brother or sister because of ephemeral power. It’s just a contest and peradventure one does not win, there is always another time in politics and elections.

“We are taking this pain as mothers to counsel our children to be careful and vigilant as they begin with the Presidential campaign on 28th September, 2022. No mother will want to watch her children fight and kill themselves. We have been praying for them, but we also need to caution them to be guided.

“It is our prayer that God and our Ancestors give our children incremental peace and joy ahead of the forthcoming elections. A peaceful and joyful person will take a contest the way it comes, victory or failure. That is the attitude we want our children in politics to put on in this election – take your victory with humility and accept your loss gallantly by congratulating one another. That is the spirit of sportsmanship.

“In the past seven years, our eyes have seen good days with enormous developments. Our eyes will see better days. Every election offers opportunity for improvement and more progress. While we appreciate the achievements of these past years, we are praying for the incoming administration to do more for us and our children who will be taking the batons from us”, the statement read.

Why Men Oppress Women In Contemporary Tmes – Omu Anioma

… Plays Host To WANEP

By Patrick Ochei

The Omu Anioma and Nneoha, HRM Obi Martha Dunkwu while recently playing host to a group under the aegis of the West Africa Network for Peace-building (WANEP), who were on peace advocacy visit to her Palace in commemoration of the World’s Peace Day, took time to analyse to them the reason men in contemporary times oppress women more than what obtained previously.

Omu Dunkwu who went memory lane, described treatment of women in the past as exemplary and exceptional, insisting that men of the old allowed more independence to women than men in contemporary times.

She took time to explain how fathers were revered in those days as real men and true heads of the family. She stated that even when a man married more than one wife, he still allowed each a reasonable percentage of independence in terms of making their own decisions, had what they wanted and could do what they needed to do to support themselves and their direct children.

She affirmed for example, that the forefathers of Anioma Nation kept the seat of the Omu to give the woman independence and uphold her voice in leadership and decision making of her community. She stated that at least, for the past 822 years, the institution of Omu has remained by the decree of those old generation men, having seen that no community or society could move forward without the involvement of women.

Omu categorically affirmed that our forebears had been in the business of women inclusion for tens of centuries ago, while in actual sense the Europeans who truncated the working synergy between our men and women with their idea of gender equality, started women inclusion 100 years ago.

The cultural mother of Anioma Nation said that while African men still remain the best in terms of practicing women inclusion, the problem with the contemporary African men is that they want to be man and woman at the same time. She said man now begins to see woman as competition instead of complementary, thereby not wanting to allow her fulfill her purpose in creation.

She posited that she can never support gender equality because it never existed by God’s ordinances, insisting that by order of creation, man comes first while woman is second.

In proffering solution to all of this in the interest of domesticating, enjoying and sustaining peace in our society, Omu advised that women should be trained and retrained and allowed critical leadership positions to help initiate peace and sustain development in our society.

Her words, “The future of humanity is in the hands of women; and no nation can grow in isolation of women. That is why we must give women a voice and not compartmentalise them instead.

“There will always be light at the end of the tunnel for women if the right things are done. However, women are afraid to take certain actions because they are not socially empowered, not educationally empowered and not economically empowered. This is because an educated person is an incisive, independent and courageous person. African women can enjoy independence more than others in other continents if only they are given education or chance to be educated. I have always said that education is the global key that unlocks all doors.

“If implemented, the United Nations Resolution 1325 had already proffered solution to women inclusion in the scheme of things. To squarely address the issue of oppression against women, we must take critical decision to make laws to give more roles to women in the Constitution and leadership decision making in our dear country and Africa”, Omu Dunkwu advocated.

Earlier in her address to Omu Anioma, the National Coordinator of WANEP, Bridget Osakwe gave a low down of the activities of the group and why they decided to pay advocacy visit to Omu Dunkwu as first pot of call in the line up of Traditional Rulers, Religious Leaders and Youth Bodies they had listed to visit.

She said as women in peace building, they came up with a programme to build the culture of peace amongst the young people of Nigeria and Africa by engaging them to handle their issues at their young age without violence.

According to Osakwe, “We are worried about the spate of insecurity in Nigeria. We have been proffering solutions through our various programmes, and our flagship programme is in early warning and early response. We have a mechanism through which we report our findings from various platforms across the states in the country with clearing house in Lagos and home in Accra, Ghana.

“We are here to find solution to insecurity as a challenge to peace. What can we do as a group and as critical stakeholders? We find Omu Anioma’s Palace as a veritable platform to begin our advocacy being a traditional leader with an honest focus on peace building in our society”, Osakwe explained.
