NCPC Boss Tasks Staff On Commitment To Duty, Says Dec. Pilgrimage Exercise Begins Soon

The Executive Secretary Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, Rev Dr Yakubu Pam has charged the Management and staff of the Commission to be committed to their duty.

He gave the charge on 9th December, 2022 during a strategic meeting with all the Management and staff of the Commission, held at the  Commission,s Chapel, NCPC Corporate headquarters, Abuja.

In his exhortation taken from Luke,s Gospel, chapter 8 verses 22 to 25, where Jesus asked his disciples to go to the other side of the Lake and as they set out sailing there was a storm.

He explained that going to the other side of the Lake as demanded by Jesus Christ meant there was a goal to accomplish. Therefore he admonished the staff to always ensure they have a goal to pursue in life which would enable them to be able to add value to the system.

He maintained that there is usually storm in the life of everyone and in the life of an organization. He averred that the important thing in such situation is the ability to overcome which would be possible through the grace of God.

He reiterated that even in the midst of the storm one should be focused and not distracted, because according to him” there would certainly be light at the end of any dark tunnel”.

He urged the staff to shun every internal politics within the Commission and concentrate on their job.

The NCPC helmsman further tasked the Commission staff on the need to maintain high level of discipline, especially punctuality to work and loyalty to constituted authorities.

Rev Pam disclosed that the  challenges facing the Commission in recent time would be surmounted , especially the issue of funding which is not peculiar to the Commission alone.

He further hinted that the Commission was working towards the commencement of the 2022 December Main pilgrimage exercise to Israel and Jordan. He assured that the date for the commencement would soon be fixed. He further explained that the December pilgrimage would be mainly states pilgrimage affairs, whose intending pilgrims had successfully been screened and had paid their money for the exercise.

The strategic meeting was attended by all the Management and staff of the Commission at the headquarters. The NCPC boss  meets with the staff in order to keep them abreast with current happenings in the Commission. 

Go, Collect Your PVC, INEC Press Corps Tells Deltans

Leadership of INEC Press Corps, IPC, Wednesday implored Deltans to come out en-masse to collect their permanent voters’ cards. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released PVCs for Nigerians who took part in the 2022 registration.

Chairman of IPC, Olorogun Festus Ahon in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the group, Mr Austin Oyinbode, which was made available to Journalists in Delta, said for Nigerians to achieve the desired change, every registered voter must go to the local government and wards to collect the PVC.

Ahon in the statement said: “There have been series of million man Marches and campaigns in progress. Many are expressing their views on the need for change in Nigeria. But this change will only come to fruition if registered voters collect their PVCs and cast their votes on election days.

“INEC has scheduled election for February 25, 2023 for Presidency and National Assembly and March 11 for Governorship and state Assemblies. For Nigerians to get the right persons into political offices, registered voters must collect their PVCs and vote.”

The statement also noted that politicians and political party leaders should encourage their members and supporters to go out and collect their PVCs, because without the collection of the PVCs and voting, the desired change will remain an illusion.

To this end, the IPC Chairman called on all Deltans and Nigerians in general to wake up and see collection of PVCs as the beginning of change in Nigeria.

Ahon said that though everyone is busy with business ventures, “They should all endeavour to create time out of their busy schedules and go to the INEC local government offices and collect their PVCs.

He also pleaded with INEC staff at the local government and ward levels to assist the people in whatever ways they can so that everyone will collect their PVCs without stress.

The Delta INEC REC, Revd. Monday Udoh Tom, had expressed dissatisfaction with the response of the people of Delta and the political parties towards collection of the permanent voters’ cards in the state.

In a recent stakeholders meeting organized by INEC, the REC lamented poor response of Deltans and the leadership of political parties to attendance to meetings with INEC and collection of PVCs.

He said despite the fact that INEC staff are doing a thankless job across the state, the people of Delta state are not coming forth to collect their PVCs. He said that more than 300,000 PVCs are lying at the INEC offices across the state waiting for their owners to collect them.

Fight Against Human Trafficking, Irregular Migration: Bozimo Calls For Partnership With NGOs

Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Isaiah Bozimo Esq has underscored the importance of partnership with Non-governmental Organisations in the fight against Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration in the state.

Mr. Bozimo stated this in his office in Asaba when the Girl Power Initiative, a Non-governmental Organisation from Benin City led by the Coordinator, May Ekido paid him a courtesy call.

He said that such collaboration would yield positive results, adding that Delta State Government was committed in tackling the menace.

Mr. Bozimo said that in demonstration of the resolve to reduce cases of human trafficking and irregular migration in the state, Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa established the Delta State Taskforce on Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration which he , the Attorney-General chairs.

The Attorney-General assured the organisation that his Ministry would appoint a Desk Officer who would be working with the organisation from April. 2023 when it would commence its activities in Delta State.

Mr. Bozimo urged the Initiative to extend their awareness campaign on human trafficking to other vulnerable communities in Local Government Areas such as Ughelli North and Ethiope West apart from Ika axis where there was increase in human trafficking and irregular migration.

Earlier, the Coordinator of GPI , Mrs May Ekido Said the organization is a feminist youth development Non-governmental organisation founded in 1994 to empower young children and females with accurate information and skills from a gender perspective, safe reliance and social action having its offices in Benin city, Uyo, Asaba, Calabar and Kubwa FCT.

She stated that GPI had been intervening on other issues that affected the girl child and women since 2012 , adding that Ministry of Justice was strategic in the fight against human trafficking.

Mrs Ekido hinted that the Initiative would embark on town halll meetings with various stakeholders to discuss and dialogue on issues of human trafficking, saying that there was a new trend on human trafficking.

She noted that GPI would carry out its activities in selected endemic communities where human trafficking and irregular migration were prevalent.

Inneh Of Owa Kingdom Appointed As Eminent Intl Peace Ambassador

In sustaining peace and nation building in the society, the Inneh of Owa Kingdom, Chief Engr. Chukwuemeka Nkenchor Okwuokennye (JP) has promised to uphold peace advocacy in his community and support government in peace building.

Chief Nkenchor made this known while speaking with our reporter during his investiture as an eminent peace advocate by the International Association of World Peace Associates (IAWPA) in Asaba, Delta State.


He said the appointment given to him by the body to propagate peace, would spur him to do greater than he had done in previous times.


The Inneh of Owa kingdom and also the founder of Calvary Polytechnic said the confidence reposed on him by the United Nation affiliated organization would not be taken for granted, adding that he would continually encourage peace in his local environment.


He added that it would also prompt him to do more in the area of peace, nation building, supporting the government and also the less privileged, orphans and widows all over the world.


Expressing joy, the Eleme of Owa kingdom, Chief Lawrence Okompu said the appointment given to the Inneh was a well deserved one, adding that he was a noble and an illustrious son of Owa kingdom.


Chief Okompu said that he had no doubt that Chief Nkenchor’s giant stride contribution, was what led to his appointment.


On the same vein, the Adolor of Owa kingdom, Chief Sylvester Egbai, said he was optimistic that the worthy son of Owa, would do well in promoting peace.


On his part, Prince Emmanuel Efeziomor said it was a commendable one, which was as a result of his good records in the society that the organisers must have seen and given him this award by the international association of World peace advocate.


Inneh has been a very hard-working man and he has actually cut some respect for himself particularly in the areas of business and entrepreneurship endeavors and also in his activities in the palace he has been able to showcase his capabilities and I am not that surprised that he was able to get this award today.

Earlier the International Director of IAWPA, Archbishop Professor Chidi Ehiriodo urged beneficiaries not to use the title for fraudulent activities, but for the purpose of peace building in the society.

In his speech, the Chairman of the occasion, Amb. Mbat Akpan said that in bringing back peace, Nigeria needs to practise the rule of law, declare state of emergency on education and encourage good family upbringing and nation building.

Non Indigenes Lauds Okowa’s Contribution Towards Sports Development

Chairman, Delta State Non Indigene Association, Sir Bennard Agazuma has commended the effort of the state government in ensuring that the National Sports Festival hosted in the state was a success.

Agazuma gave the commendation while speaking with our reporter at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba the state capital.

He said with the facilities available for athletes to compete, the state governor, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa had proven to be a man of his words.

He added that governor Okowa had earlier assured Nigerians of hosting the sports event in the state and truly to his words, turned out a reality.

The Chairman commended the governor for giving non Indigenes on the state an opportunity to participate in government activities, adding that,  it was the reason for the massive presence of his members at the Sports Festival ceremony.

NSF: Delta Wins Gold 7th Time

… as Bayelsa Dethrones Edo To Second Position

Delta State have successfully retained their National Sports Festival crown, winning the silverware for a record 7th time.

After 12 days of intense contest among the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Delta confirmed their status as the number one in Sports in the country at the 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba  tagged “Delta 2022” .

Team Delta topped the overall medals table with a haul of 648 medals comprising 320 gold, 200 Silver, 128 bronze, while team Bayelsa dethroned Edo to finish second with a total of 337 medals, 132 gold, 115 silver and 90 bronze, the highest number of medals won in the history of the state.

Edo were distant third amassing 339 medals: 78 gold, 94 silver, 167 bronze. Oyo State came 4th with 163 medals: 50 gold, 51 Silver, 62 bronze, as Lagos finished 5th with 172 medals, 41 gold, 57 Silver, 74 bronze. Rivers, Kano, Ogun and FCT all occupied 6th to 10th position.

Zamfara finished bottom with no medal, as Gombe recorded 6 bronze, Sokoto got 3 medals: 1 silver, 2 bronze.

Declaring the Unity Games  closed, the President, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari represented by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Chief Sunday Dare congratulated Delta for emerging overall winners of the 21st edition of the festival, pointing out that the competition in Asaba in the last 12 days had proven that Sports remain unifier of youths in the country.

President Buhari while condoling with the family of Imo state boxer Chukwuemeka Igboanugo who passed on during the fiesta, noted that the power of sports was fully activated during the national sports festival because participants set aside ethnic and religious orientation to compete.

He charged all the athletes who won medals in the just concluded 21st National Sports Festival to work hard to represent Nigeria and win medals at the Olympic Games in Paris, France in 2024.

He emphasized the need for states in the country to invest in sports development and infrastructure.

In an address, Delta State governor,Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa who was represented by his deputy governor, Dcnl Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, commended all the athletes who took part in the National Sports Festival describing them as heroes and heroines.

He also praised the efforts of Delta State for maintaining the standard and retaining festival title for the 7th time in a row and appreciated Team Bayelsa for the good spirit they put up during the spectacle.

In an interview, an athlete Ayomide Powei, said she was happy to see Team Bayelsa finish second for the first time, assuring Bayelsans of a better outing in the next sports festival in Ogun State.

Highlight of the closing ceremony was the was the official announcement of Ogun State as hosts of the 22nd National Sports Festival in 2024 as neighboring Oyo State would be on standby.

The ceremony also featured music entertainment by Popular Delta State born musician, Erhiga Agarivbie known as Erigga and Zlatan  literally set the place on ‘fire’ with some of their popular songs, amongst other musicians.

Speak Out, Say No to Violence Unobunjo Tells Market Women

Chairperson,  Nigeria Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter, Comrade Sonia Unobunjo has called on women to speak out on any attempt of violence against women and the girl child.

Unobunjo gave the call during a sensitization visit with other female Journalists to Anioma Market in Okpanam.

She advised them not give in to any form of molestation or harassment from the men to them and their young female children adding that they should endeavour to say no to psychological trauma caused by violence attack on them.

Unobunjo said with the Violence Against Person’s Prohibition Act 2015 (VAPP) law, affected women and girl child had the right to find justice as the state government had provided a Sexual Assault Referral Centre at the Asaba Specialist Hospital, where victims can come to seek solace and find justice.

She urged them not hesitate to report any case of violence to the referral centre where prompt action would be taken.

Speaking on the motive behind the advocacy visit, the Chairperson said it was, in commemoration with the 16 days activism against violence.

Responding, the Secretary of the market. Mrs Juliet Agatue commended the female Journalists for coming to enlighten the traders on the need to stay safe and not be abused by the men.

2023 Election Would Not Hold, Unless…

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Delta state, has said that the 2023 general elections would not be conducted as usual, hence he called on politicians and political parties to mobilise their followers to collect their permanent voters’ cards as that is the only criteria for voting during the election.

He said the belief that anything could be manipulated to win the election was no longer possible as the commission has tightened every loose end, saying it is only PVCs that are collected that would be counted for voters on the election day.

The Delta REC who decried the non-chalant attitude of leaders of political parties to stakeholders meetings called by INEC, said politicians and political parties are the beneficiaries of the PVCs, arguing that without collection of the PVCs, the mass rallies and campaigns would not yield needed result.

At the stakeholders meeting called on Tuesday by INEC in Delta state, all the leading political parties in the state were conspicuously absent as only journalists, a Reverend Father, few members of civil society groups were at the meeting with INEC officials from the 25 local government areas of the state.

Revd Udoh Tom who said INEC has done all it could to mobilise Deltans to collect the PVCs, expressed disappointment at the response from both the political parties and the people of Delta state, saying though INEC is doing a thankless job, the people and politicians in Delta are not responsive to the calls of INEC.

He said political parties are supposed to be in the forefront in the collection of PVCs but regrettably the parties do not show up for meetings just as they are not sensitizing their people to collect their PVCs.

He said INEC staff are going through pains to ensure the cards are collected but the response from the political parties and the people has remained abysmally poor.

In a speech delivered at the stakeholders meeting, Revd Udoh Tom said following the display of preliminary register of voters to correct some anomalies in the register, a total of 1,562 claims were made while 65 objections were recorded across the state.

He also said arising from the visit to the 5863 polling units across the state, it was discovered that 930 polling units are above 999 registered voters and that 169 polling units are being considered for decongestion.

He also said the Delta INEC headquarters has received the 2022 Permanent Voters Cards and collection is scheduled to commence on December 12 and end January 22, 2022.

 He said collection of the PVCs at INEC local government offices would begin from December 12 to January 6 while collection of PVCs at ward levels would begin from January 6 to 15, 2023, thereafter it would return to local government level from 15 to 22 January 2023.

In preparation for the rollout of PVC collection, he said the commission has stepped up stakeholders engagement, within the next 7 days to mobilize registrants to come out and collect their PVCs. He identified seven strategies to reach voters in all levels.

He identified creation of whatsapp groups at both the state and LGA level, with contacts of persons under the categories specified above, with Desk Officers as admin of the whatsapp platform.

He also identified sensitization to markets, motor parks, traditional rulers, road walk to mosques, cinema viewing centres and churches across the 25 local government areas of the state.

He said this strategy is intended to help the commission reach as many stakeholders as possible before the December 12 roll out of PVC collection.

The head of information and communication technology in the INEC office, Engr. Mba Onuoha, said so far 16.2 percent of PVCs have been collected in Delta state. She added that 17,115 transfers were made while 70,300 new registration have been made available.

Onuoha who was represented by Engr. Mercy Ehikhametalor, said a total of 326576 PVCs are available both old and new with 52,868 so far collected, adding that the commission has been pleading with all Deltans to collect their PVCs.

SENATE 2023: Delta North Kings Again, Back Ned Nwoko

Traditional Rulers in Delta North senatorial district also known as Anioma today met and gave their royal blessings to Hon. Prince Ned Nwoko as favoured candidate for Delta North senate seat come 2023.

Rising from a meeting held Wednesday December 6,2022, at the palace of the Obi of Owa Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Efeizormor II, the traditional Rulers numbering over 30 said they resolved to back Prince Ned Nwoko because he has the best interests of Anioma at heart,as motivation to serve as senator.

The Monarchs representing the nine Anioma local government areas of Ika North East,Ika South,Aniocha North,Aniocha South , Oshimili North , Oshimili South,Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West and Ukwuani, noted that the unanimous decision to throw their weight behind Ned Nwoko was based on his track record of integrity,service and philanthropy which had benefited the generality of the people.

Addressing the royal fathers, Obi Efeizormor, immediate past Chairman of Delta traditional Rulers forum described Prince Ned Nwoko as a good son with utmost respect for the traditional institution as well as Anioma culture and identity.

He expressed optimism that Nwoko would bring meaningful development and lasting peace to Anioma land if elected senator and urged all sons and daughters of Delta North to support him.

Responding ,Prince Ned Nwoko ,PDP Delta North Senatorial candidate thanked the royal fathers for their overwhelming love and solidarity.

Prince Nwoko ,Founder of the first Sports university in Sub Saharan Africa located at his Idumuje Ugboko homeland and Antarctica Explorer ,said he would restore the glory of Anioma at the national Assembly.

Nwoko pledged to ensure distinct constitutional role for Traditional rulers with appropriate legislation to promote their status as custodians of cultural values and history.

The PDP senatorial candidate also gave assurance that the empowerment of youths and women as important stakeholders in the society, would be his basic agenda at the Senate.

It would be recalled that traditional rulers in Delta North had earlier in May 2022, chosen Prince Ned Nwoko as their preferred candidate for the 2023 senate seat.

This was part of a communique issued after deliberations by the Anioma kings at a meeting attended by over 40 traditional rulers at the palace of the Asagba of Asaba,HRM Obi Professor Chike Edozien.

NSF : Igali Calls for Timely Release of Medal Table

Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Chief Daniel Igali has called for the prompt update medals table in the ongoing 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba, tagged Delta 2022.

Igali while speaking with pressmen at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, said the current medal table does not reflect the overwhelming success of team Bayelsa so far.

He said that he had told the officials of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation to promptly release the medals won each day before the next session of events.

According to him, the lateness in the release of the medal table does not portray the importance of the sports festival.

The Commissioner called on the authorities to task every federation to provide the results of events within 24 hours for the main organizing committee to have the daily updates of the table.

 

Igali noted that what was currently in the log, does not reflect  team Bayelsa performance on two days having amassed over 60 gold medals with only 31 gold reflecting in the medals table.

The Olympic and World Wrestling Champion pointed out that the instant reward of two hundred thousand naira for gold medalists, one hundred thousand naira for silver medalists  and fifty thousand naira for bronze medalists earlier promised by the Bayelsa state government were been fulfilled.

While commending Delta State for hosting this year’s spectacle, the President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation, said any referee that is found to be involved in unprofessional conduct would be punished, stressing that athletes who emerges winners in wrestling events in Asaba would automatically become champions in the weight class.

He asserted that the federation would have its national wrestling championship in March next year in Bayelsa before the African championship in April.

Team Bayelsa are currently second in the latest medals table behind hosts, Delta updated by the organizers after day six of the festival
