The meeting was marked by mutual excitement and respect, as the Senator expressed immense pride in the team’s achievements, while the players were equally enthusiastic to engage with the lawmaker, known for his vocal advocacy and support for sports development in Nigeria.

While congratulating the team on their latest triumph, Senator Ned Nwoko praised their historic accomplishment in becoming the first team in Africa to win five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles, following their impressive victory over Mali on Sunday night in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

He described the victory as a moment of national pride with far reaching implications for the growth of sports, particularly women’s sports, in the country.

WASSCE 2025: Only 38.32 Percent Pass English, Mathematics With Five Credits

The West African Examinations Council revealed a sharp decline in performance compared to the previous year, following the release of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results for school candidates.

Out of a total of 1,969,313 candidates who sat the examination across 23,554 schools, only 754,545 candidates — representing 38.32 per cent — obtained a minimum of five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. This marks a significant 33.8 per cent drop from the 72.12 per cent recorded in 2024

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, August 4, 2025, at WAEC’s national headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, the Head of Nigeria National Office, Dr Amos Dangut, attributed the drop in performance to the Council’s new approach of serialising objective test papers in key subjects such as English, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics.

“This approach drastically reduced the incidence of collusion and made examination malpractice more difficult. We observed a dip in the performance of objective papers, but essay papers remained consistent with previous years. It’s a strong signal that candidates must rely on their own preparation,” Dangut said.

The examination was conducted between April 24 and June 20, 2025, while coordination and marking took place from July 3 to 21. WAEC also deployed a real-time digital scoring system to enhance the speed and accuracy of result processing.

Of the total candidates, 1,517,517 (77.06 per cent) had their results fully processed and released, while 451,796 (22.94 per cent) are still being processed due to technical issues, which WAEC assured would be resolved in the coming days.

On examination malpractice, 192,089 results — representing 9.75 per cent — are currently being withheld for offenses including the use of banned mobile phones and collusion. This is a slight improvement from the 11.92 per cent withheld in 2024.

“These unscrupulous elements have become a thorn in the Council’s flesh. Some even use our name to distribute fake messages. We’ve apprehended some of them, and appropriate sanctions will be applied,” Dangut stated.

He also noted that states owing WAEC would not be able to access the results of their sponsored candidates until outstanding debts are cleared.

Meanwhile, 12,178 candidates with special needs registered for the 2025 WASSCE. Of these, 112 were visually impaired, 615 had hearing challenges, 52 were mentally challenged, and 37 had physical disabilities. WAEC confirmed that all were provided with the necessary support.

On gender distribution, 976,787 candidates (49.60%) were male, while 992,526 (50.40%) were female.

Of the 754,545 who passed with five credits including English and Maths, females outperformed males — accounting for 53.99 percent (407,353) of the successful candidates, while males made up 46.01 per cent (347,192).

This year’s exam also marked a significant milestone as WAEC allowed candidates to choose between the traditional paper-and-pencil format and a computer-based test (CBT) option — part of the Council’s move toward full digitisation by 2026.

“This year’s exam placed us as a foremost examining body to have conducted an achievement test using a computer-based format,” Dangut said.

The results were officially released on Monday.

Takim made the call while speaking with our reporter in Asaba.

He said the loss which was as a result of the heavy down pour led to the flood in the Anwai River which destroyed their fish ponds.

According to him, despite the effort of the governor in providing proactive measures by bringing the swamp buggies, about five cluster fish farms around the Anwai river were submerged by the flood.

While commending government for thier support thus far, they solicited for more help to enable them remain in business.

He said as a result of the disaster, many persons have taken advantage of their loss to scout for the fishes and sell to market women and passer-by.

The Commissioner said since the commencement of  Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori -led administration which promised environmental stability, the governor had proactively deployed the swamp buggy to the river.

He said with the swamp buggy, the river had been opened to enable free flow of water, and the sand from the river was used to make a pond wall for them. However, the recent flood he said came from another area because where the water normally comes through is the Camp 74 river area.

According to him, prior to the flood some of the fish farmers had earlier commended the state government for coming to thier rescue when they were faced with the heavy force of water from Okpanam and other communities in Asaba channelling into the Anwai river.

Those who also spoke were the Chairman of Akpako Fish Farms, Sir Joseph Ngamana and the Chairman of Okowa Cluster Fish Farm, Mr Ernest Ogosi, appealing for government intervention so as to sustain thier fish farming business.

The Chairman said the effect of the loss has made 1000 fish farmers in the farm hopeless, hence the need for government support.

Speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the farm, Mr Isaac Onowita commended governor who had earlier directed the Ministry of Environment to dredge the river.

Onowita said the whole of phase two to phase three where bulk of the farming processes takes place have been affected by the flood.

He said about 65 percent of the farm has been swept off by the flood hence the need for government intervention so that they can remain in business.

The anniversary event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Top View Hotel, Okpanam Road, Asaba, starting at 11:00 a.m. The highlight of the celebration will be the unveiling of BEL DIALOGUE, a public engagement forum that will convene key stakeholders including policymakers, community leaders, civil society actors, and development experts to engage in solution-driven conversations on pressing socio-economic issues.

The maiden edition of BEL DIALOGUE will focus on the theme: “Development or Displacement: Understanding the Cost of Unregulated Land Acquisition in Our Communities — The Role of Government and Traditional Institutions in Safeguarding Community Lands.” The theme was carefully selected in response to the growing threat posed by unregulated real estate expansion, particularly the encroachment on communal farmlands and the impact on food security, livelihoods, and social stability.

In a statement signed by the President and Chief Executive Officer of Bel Media Consult Limited, Emmanuel Enebeli, MNIPR, the organisation reaffirmed its commitment to driving public interest journalism and participatory governance. According to the statement, BEL DIALOGUE is envisioned as a platform that will annually bring together a wide range of voices to interrogate policies and co-create solutions that support sustainable and inclusive development.

With BEL DIALOGUE, we are extending that mission beyond news reporting , by creating a civic space where concerns can be raised, ideas exchanged, and solutions crafted in a collaborative environment,” the statement noted.

The Chairman of the occasion, lead discussants, and other key participants are expected to be formally unveiled in the coming days as preparations intensify for the event.

Founded on May 3, 2013, Ndokwa Reporters was initially published under a sister company, Syncoms Integrated Services. Throughout its journey, it has remained anchored on its guiding slogan: “Towards a Better Community Development.”
