Ifeadi Hails Emergence of Asagba-Designate, Obi Azinge

… Says He’s Well Positioned To Sustain Effective Relationship With OFAAC

By Patrick Ochei

The President of the Organisation For the Advancement of Anioma Culture (OFAAC) – the umbrella body of Anioma Culture and Chief Executive Officer of the Contemporary Group Limited, Arc. Kester Ifeadi has congratulated the Asagba designate for Asaba Kingdom, Obi (Prof) Epiphany Azinge, describing the process that brought him to authority as awesome.

The culture enthusiast in a statement, said he has keenly watched the process of producing the next Asagba of Asaba after the last occupant, and he could attest to the fact that Asaba people have proven to be careful custodians of culture and traditions of their forebears.

Ifeadi who hailed the emergence of Obi Prof. Azinge, affirmed that the Kingdom of Asaba has made the right and most suitably qualified choice for the stool of the Asagba of Asaba.

He further eulogized the sterling leadership quality of Obi Azinge both in the legal profession, community development services and humanity in general, confirming that he was adequately prepared for the throne of his forefathers as a culture enthusiast himself.

The OFAAC henchman, thereby posited that he has no doubts of the capacity of Obi Azinge to deliver on mandate in bringing Asaba and the rest of the Anioma nation to their deserved limelight.

Ifeadi while speaking on the relationship of OFAAC and the Asagba Palace, insisted that Obi Azinge has all the required credentials to not only advance innovative culture in Asaba and Anioma nation, but also sustain the years of relationship already built for cultural renaissance and traditional harmony within and beyond Anioma nation.

According to the statement, “We in OFAAC are pleased to associate with the Asagba Palace. We had a long standing relationship with the past Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien, who was a strong pillar for OFAAC and supporter of all our cultural programmes for Anioma people.

“With Obi Azinge on the throne as Asagba of Asaba, we are more confident that this impeccable relationship would be nurtured and sustained for the benefit of Asaba people in particular, and Anioma people in general”, Ifeadi stated.

He therefore prayed for God’s grace and wisdom to guide the new Asagba in his traditional leadership roles, as well as help him ward off evil inclined traditional cum political sycophants.

Sheriff Unveils Jerseys, Trophies, for Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Tourney

A Niger-Delta activist, and National Coordinator, Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ, Comrade Chief Sheriff Mulade, on Thursday, August 22, 2024, inaugurated a 10-man local organising committee, LOC, for the Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Football Tournament created to promote peaceful co-existence among ethnic groups in Delta Central and Delta South Senatorial Districts of the State.

The tournament is scheduled to commence on November 16, 2024, at Ode Itsekiri, and it will serve as one of the activities to mark the United Nations International Day of Tolerance, on Dec. 7, 2024.

Chief Mulade, a Niger Delta Peace advocate, in his speech at the ceremony held at the CEPEJ’s Africa for Peace Centre in Ugolo-Okpe near Osubi, noted that this year’s event, the fourth in the series, would have Hon. Kenneth Nwaomucha, as Chairman of the 10-man organizing committee.

He disclosed that the competition had been expanded to accommodate more ethnic groups unlike in the past when it involved only Itsekiri and Ijaw ethnic groups.

According to him, “this programme is our contribution to promote peaceful coexistence among the people of Delta State. We expanded it to accommodate Isoko and Urhobo people to create a peaceful environment for the government to develop all parts of the State.”

He disclosed that the Olu of Warri, His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, would kickoff the expanded Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup football tournament at Ode-Itsekiri as the Royal Father of the Day. Road Construction: DTSG Affirms Engagement Of Competent Contractors

The Delta State government has said the state engages only competent contractors in handling road projects across the State.

Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Commissioner for Works, Rural and Riverine, disclosed this to on Thursday August 22, 2024, when members of Indigenous Correspondents’ Chapel (ICC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Asaba, the State capital.

He revealed that a whole lot of effort is put in by the ministry to engage competent contractors following the various factors that are associated in road construction.

According to him, “I can tell you that a whole lot of effort is usually being put in, in the ministry to engage very competent contractors .

“Road construction is not entirely like other things that you do that you can easily tell what will come out. There are a whole lot of factors that comes in.

“And that is why we have what is called retention; you construct a road, if that road if ten naira and we are able to pay possibly up to nine naira and we hold back one naira for a period of one year, at some instances up to two years.

“We hold that money so that if anything happens that, that your job have issues, you can now still go back and do it without any other additional cost to government and then, thereafter when we certify that the road is able to stand the test of time, then you are now allow to have access through a certificate that your money that is retained. Sometimes it depends on the volume of work, it runs into some hundreds of millions.

“And so, it is proper engineering practice that it is possible that for some obvious reason that in the cause of work one or two things may happen.

“No matter how much effort you put in, along the line even a competent contractor could construct a road where along the line one thing happens that it generate a pothole or a little crater because the contractor is not the ancestral owner where the road is constructed.

“There could be some elements, maybe somewhere around there before was a soak-away 60 years ago but overtime, it has been covered by normal soil type and even when you are doing excavation to remove unsuitable materials, you do not know that beneath what you thought you have gotten to the suitable material”, explaining that there might be something that the contractor didn’t see.

“And you start contracting and you do the road and you compact and the road is fine. Now, continuous pressure by vehicles that are coming and are carrying loads as much as 45 tonnage weight increased auxils on that road like the Dangote kind of truck.

“By the time they continue to pound the road, something may happen in that particular spot that you didn’t see, that does not mean that we ate dealing with contractors that are not competent”, stressing that roads are of different categories.

“If we continue to insist that we must bring foreign contractors coming from abroad, that contractor was not born a contractor. It is in the cause of time that he grew, like they said, experience is the best teacher.

“Overtime, as the contractors that we have engaged, people that you call indigenous contractors, they have shown that they could also improve in their abilities. The contractors that we have, to a very large extence are doing well.

“Some of them now are doing very beautiful bridges and if you see some of the things they are doing, you will not even believe that it is coming from some of these our indigenous contractors but that is not to say that we will not take into cognizance some of these issues that you have raised for us to further raise the bar”.

On the issues of contractors abandoning projects, he said: “that is not entirely true. There are certain things our people need to understand. If you are constructing a road awarded to you for instance in March, which most of the time is dry season where you have lesser rain.

“And you continue, you have been able to remove unsuitable materials, build your concrete works (the drains and possibly the covets), and by the time you get into June, when you are supposed to start your earth work, maybe bringing in Laterite and then, the rain comes in some immeasurable proportion , even we as a ministry, will ask you to march brake.

“Because if you proceed because you want to gain speed, you are not going to be able to have the opportunity to be able to compact the Laterite that you are going to pour and spread across that corridor because you do know that once you pour Laterite and you have that kind if water on top of it, as you are compacting it, it is going to attach to the roller and you cannot achieve what you want to achieve

“You cannot even wake up and say let me go and apply crushed stones on top of it. And you cannot all of a sudden change from Laterite in a dry land to shape sand which you can possibly use to work in raining season. The cost of the shape sand is not the same thing as the Laterite”, insisting that Laterite must be applied as at when due.

He said such a situation between the raining season and another dry season, it would not be correct for people to say the contractor has abandoned such a project.

He equally pointed out that a contractor may not be seen at a site due to escalation in price or preparation of certificates awaiting government payment, calling on Deltans to exercise patient with the government and contractors handling road projects across the State particularly with the ongoing work on Ododegho road as the project was awaiting review.

He pointed out that government may also be engaged in scale of preference which is not “total adjudication”, as government would not take everything at one moment.

“The contractor may just hold on to either source money from the bank or for government to process certificates and pay so that he can also return”, he added .

Earlier, Chairman of the Chapel, Kenneth Orusi, appreciated the Commissioner and his management team for approving the courtesy.

He pointed out the need for projects to be constantly given to more competent and capable contractors in order for executed projects to stand the test of time.

Economic Empowerment, Core Goal Of Renewed Hope Initiative – ‘Remi Tinubu

The wife of Nigeria’s President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Thursday, said economic empowerment remained a core goal of the Renewed Hope Initiative of Senator Bola Tinubu’s administration in the country.

Mrs Tinubu said the Renewed Hope Initiative had consistently delivered on this promise for both women and youths across the six geo-political zones to support the economic reforms of the administration.

The First Lady disclosed this at the official flag off of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme and recapitalisation grants for 1,000 women petty traders in Delta State.

“I am honoured to be here today at the empowerment programme of one thousand women petty traders across the nation as part of our continued commitment to drive economic growth  towards a better life for families.

“This event is taking place simultaneously across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. I appreciate our host, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and his amiable wife for the warm reception and hospitality accorded us.

“As you are all aware of the challenges faced by small and medium enterprises, especially the petty traders who form the backbone of our local economies.

“These challenges, however, have not deterred the strength of our women. I salute you all and celebrate your courage and resilience that keep you going to put food on the table for your families.

“Today, through the Renewed Hope Initiative Economic Empowerment Programme, we are providing one thousand pre-selected women petty traders per state with the grant of N50,000 each to recapitalise and grow their businesses.

“A total of N1.850 billion will be disbursed to 37,000 women petty traders across the nation. And the good news for Delta as mentioned by Her Excellency, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, the Governor has decided to support our N50 million grant with another sum of N50 million. So, instead of the women receiving N50,000, they will be receiving N100,000 each.

“We also distributed wallets to the women petty traders…the waist belt that you put your money. So, you see that the business is already booming.

“The grant that you are receiving today is to assist the women petty traders to overcome their challenges, expand their businesses, create more jobs and contribute more robustly to our economy.

“Economic empowerment remains a core objective of the Renewed Hope Initiative and we have consistently delivered on this promise for both women and youths across the six geo-political zones to support the economic reforms of this administration.

“We recognise that empowering women economically is not just a moral imperative, but a strategic one. When women thrive, their families thrive, and, by extension, our communities and nation prosper.

“To the beneficiaries of this programme, I say and I quote ‘you are the heart of our local economies, the foundation of our communities and the unsung heroes of our nation’. You have shown incredible resilience in overcoming challenges to build your businesses.

“Let us continue to work together to build a Nigeria where every woman has the opportunity to succeed, where every small business can grow and contribute to our prosperity,” she said.

Welcoming Mrs Tinubu earlier, the wife of the Governor of Delta State and State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, described the President’s wife as a beloved mother, who is elegant, graceful, alluring, accessible and kind-hearted.

“Your Excellency, your commitment to the well-being of Nigerians through your Renewed Hope Initiative- in Agriculture, Education, Economic Empowerment, Social Investment and Health Care, is commendable.

“As a state, we have benefitted from these initiatives, including the distribution of notebooks and scholarship scheme for students, grants for the elderly and farmers and distribution of bags of rice to indigent women.

“We are here today to flag off another empowerment initiative; over thirty-seven thousand petty traders across the country will benefit from this programme.

“This is overwhelming and worthy of commendation. As you always say to us, no family should suffer in this administration. This gesture is a clear testimony that Nigerians will be catered for.

“Every philanthropic gesture is worth emulating; in line with this, my dear husband, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is supporting this empowerment scheme with the sum of N50 million.

“On my part, through the You Matter Charity Foundation, I have empowered and supported rural market women, initiated Free Medical Care for the elderly and, at the core of my foundation, I am providing support for Autistic Children and Children with Special needs.

“Let me again thank our mother for choosing Delta State for this flag off; this is a sign that more goodies are on the way. To the beneficiaries, I congratulate you on being part of this gesture. I encourage you to make good use of this empowerment; grow your business and contribute to the well-being of your families.”

On his part, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed delight with Mrs Tinubu for choosing Delta State for the flag- off of the empowerment programme and commended the First Lady for supporting Mr President in his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Gbegbaje Reveals Actions To Be Taken Against Pension Scammers

Following a recent report on a particular pension scammer, the Chairman, Delta State Bureau for Pensions, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje (KSM)has disclosed actions that would be implemented on him.
Ogidi-Gbegbaje gave the disclosure when he played host to members of the Indigenous Correspondents’ Chapel (ICC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council at his office in Asaba.
He said the activity of one scammer whose name he gave as James Onoja Pen, with the phone number 07070764813, demanding the sum of N45, 000 to facilitate the payment for a retiree, has been brought to his notice.
The Chairman said government was after pensions’ scammers who misled innocent citizens especially unsuspecting pensioners and their family members.
He warned that those indulged in defrauding pensioners of their hard earned resources to desist as they would be made to face the wrath of the law.
He said the Bureau under his watch will not tolerate any form of corruption and unscrupulous element, adding that the scammer was not a staff of the board.
“We do not solicit for or demand for payments in the processing of pension benefits. If there is anybody who is doing so, I want to plead, let that person be exposed, because if I get reliable information on those persons or person who are doing that, such person or persons will face the law, I will not tolerate that and it will not be encouraged”.
“Anybody who is found wanting doing that, will face dire consequences. That is my position on it”, the forthright Bureau Chairman, declared.
“It may have happened in the past but not here. Somebody came here in respect of pension for his late mother and he said he got a phone call from somebody who got the information of the late mother very correctly but now said he should part with N45, 000 to get the money out quickly”.
“I have collected the name of the person who made that phone call, I will strongly advise and warn that anybody who accepts such request to give gratification to anybody for the processing or the payments for entitlement, does so at his/her own risk”.

NCPC Boss Flags Off Training Program For Staff Preparatory For Next Pilgrimage Exercise

The Executive Secretary Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, has declared open the first NCPC annual general staff training program under his leadership.

At the opening ceremony of the event on Monday, August 19, 2024 at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Asokoro, Abuja, the Executive Secretary emphasized that training and retraining of staff is very strategic as it is a fundamental policy of government duly budgeted for aimed at improving on the productivity of staff members.

He explained that the training was made possible because of the prudent spending of the scarce resources available to the Commission which has made the leadership to cultivate the culture of saving in order to achieve the Commission’s set goals.

He maintained that the training is essentially meant to help improve the work of the staff so that according to him, “we can maximise our output”.

The NCPC boss affirmed that he believes strongly in team spirit and this has reflected in the character of his leadership in NCPC.
He admonished staff to embrace God in everything they do. In his words, “the number one thing you need in this training is God Almighty”.

He urged them never to rest on their oars and should always aspire to acquire more knowledge because ” everyone of us is a potential leader”.

The NCPC helmsman also stated that under his watch, the Commission had enthroned an efficient system of division of labour, especially as it applies to the zonal offices where they have been empowered to effectively supervise their respective zones, rather than being at the mercy of the headquarters.

He stressed that all hands must be on deck to ensure a hitch free pilgrimage operation in the Commission’s upcoming pilgrimage exercise which he assured would be one of the best ever in the history of NCPC.

The NCPC annual training program is slated to last for one week from 19th to 23rd August, 2024 and is expected to run simultaneously in all the six Geo- Political zones where the six zonal offices of the Commission are situated.
