Nuances Of The Boy Child On Int’l Day of The Boy Child

By Patrick Ochei

The International Day of the Boy Child, the 16th day of May marks the Boy’s Day as approved and ratified by the United Nations. Today’s celebration marking the 2025 International Boys Day is themed “Promotion of Positive Male Role Models”.

Over the years, attention had been focused on the Girl Child with so much sensation to pamper her. We have the International Day of the Girl Child which is celebrated with so much funfair; and that has taken a journey from some other internationally recognized female celebrations, including the Mother’s Day that is celebrated severally in one calendar year. The disparity is often visible and has continued until lately.

While challenges affecting the female child are on the front burner of societal discussions, that of the male child is often overlooked. In view of this, the International Day of the Boy Child was founded.

May 16th is International Day of the Boy Child. It was founded in 2018 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a university lecturer from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It focuses on boys and their well-being, their needs to feel happy, healthy, and valued within family and community. In a letter to government leaders and NGOs, Teelucksingh says, “On the media, there are regular incidents in which young, misguided boys and teenagers are involved in crime and violence. If a boy child is neglected or fed a diet of hate and violence, it is obvious he will develop into a teenager who is misguided and confused. There is an urgent need to focus on the home and school in order to save the boy child.”

As we celebrate the Boy Child today, let’s not be carried away that he is a man and can always help himself. These days, the Boy Child needs more attention than the Girl Child. A lot of them are derailing for lack of parental and societal attention. While parents see them as men and heads of the family, the society sees them as future leaders and warlords

Oftentimes, their emotions are overlooked. The boy child is taught to be a man in all circumstances of life; to be strong and have a mentality of a conqueror. His emotions therefore, are hidden inside his macho belief of being a strong boy. This is the beginning of bullying which later in life translates into domestic violence and all other vices that give the society a challenge.

This is the time to trace the root causes of our unstable society usually manned by men. If the beginning of the boy child is not well fashioned, the ending may be disastrous, especially when he is found as head of a home, decision maker in leadership positions or as king over a community or emperor over an empire. This is the time to help the boy child who becomes a man tomorrow, to take positive responsibility of his personality for the good of society.

As simple as it sounds, the boy must be taught how to do house chores, cook and love. He must be taught moral values, obedience and responsible team playing. He must be friendly; how he relates with his sisters lovingly will prove how he will love his wife in future.

In a nutshell, the boy child is an important being in the creation and must be treated nicely and lovingly. He should not be left unattended to as regards his emotions, rights, needs and decisions. If we missed attending to him properly, the future may be awaiting the disaster that will arise from him. Let’s be guided.

Happy International Day of the Boy Child.

Delta North APC Meeting: Setting the Record Straight

…As Delta North Stakeholders Set To Meet in Idumuje Ugboko

Chief Sen Rich Kay Enuenwosu of Ned Media Directorate has dismissed the notion on the misconception on Senator Ned Nwoko’s residence in Idumuje Ugboko as venue for the Delta North APC meeting,

He said a recent publication has sparked controversy over an upcoming Delta North APC meeting scheduled to hold at Senator Ned Nwoko’s residence in Idumuje Ugboko on June 14, 2025.

The meeting’s purpose and hosting arrangement have been misrepresented, prompting clarification.

According to him, Delta North APC has been holding bi-monthly meetings across the three federal constituencies since January. The meetings are rotated among the constituencies, and it is now Aniocha/Oshimili’s turn to host.

Enuenwosu said the Senator representing Delta North, Ned Nwoko was given the privilege to host the meeting at his residence in Idumuje Ugboko on

He noted that the meeting was conveyed by the Senatorial Chairman, Chief Adizue Eluaka, who has the constitutional authority to do so, adding that Senator Prince Ned Nwoko is only providing a venue to host the meeting.

Contrary to speculation, Senator Nwoko did not summon the meeting, and there is no agenda for a faceoff with Deputy Governor Sir Monday John Onyeme. The meeting’s purpose is to discuss party matters and strengthen cohesion within Delta North APC.

“the hosting arrangement is based on a rotation among the three federal constituencies. Other nationalities in Delta North have hosted the meeting in the past, and it is now Senator Nwoko’s turn as the representative of Aniocha/Oshimili”.

“The Delta North APC meeting at Senator Nwoko’s residence is a routine gathering aimed at promoting party unity and discussing important issues. The meeting’s scheduling is based on a rotational hosting arrangement, and Senator Nwoko’s hosting duties are in line with this arrangement”.

First Lady Donates Farm Inputs, Grants To 400 Farmers In Delta

Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reiterated the crucial role of agriculture in achieving food security, creating employment, and driving economic growth.

She made this known during the distribution of farm inputs and financial grants to 400 farmers under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Agricultural Support Program, organized in collaboration with the ‘You Matter Charity Foundation’, held at the Events Centre, Asaba.

Represented by the wife of the Delta State Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, Mrs. Tinubu expressed delight at seeing women, young farmers in secondary schools, youths, and cooperative groups becoming actively involved in farming.

She emphasized that “gardening, a time-honored tradition, sustained our forefathers and can still benefit families today”.

She stated that the ‘Every Home a Garden’ initiative underscores the importance of home gardening as a tool to reduce economic hardship for families.

“The beauty of it is that it’s not limited by gender or age. Growing your own food helps promote healthier eating, improves your diet, and provides fresh, nutritious produce,” she said.

Mrs. Tinubu further noted: “You will agree with me that it is possible for us to grow our own food. The earth is blessed for our sake when you plant, it germinates and yields a great harvest.

“The essence of this initiative is to bring us back on track and increase food production across the nation. This is about feeding your family and sharing with your neighbours.”

She announced that four categories of beneficiaries, women, youths, secondary school students, and farming groups were selected to receive various farm implements and seedlings as part of the initiative.

“I hope this gesture encourages you. I urge you to give your best as you return to your farms daily.

“I have my own garden behind my house, and soon I will begin harvesting corn, vegetables, and other crops. On a lighter note, I am happy to share with you.

“For those who haven’t started, please give it a thought. Let’s join hands to grow more food and move from scarcity to abundance.”

In her welcome address, the wife of the Delta State Governor, Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Catherine Onyeme, said the event was dedicated to empowering student farmers, women, youths, and cooperative farming groups in Delta State.

“Today’s event reflects our unwavering commitment to equipping farmers with the tools and financial support they need to thrive.

“Through the Agricultural Support Program of the Renewed Hope Initiative, led by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, we reaffirm our dedication to strengthening agriculture as a key driver of economic growth”, she said.

While noting that farmers represent a significant portion of the population, she said they often face challenges such as limited access to resources, financing, and modern techniques.

She said: “Empowering farmers is not merely an intervention—it is a necessity. It restores hope, promotes food security, boosts household income, and positions farming as a viable and transformational enterprise”.

She expressed gratitude to Mrs. Tinubu for her visionary leadership and commitment to the Renewed Hope Initiative, and encouraged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity.

Deaconess Oborevwori, said: “Let this support be a stepping stone to greater achievements—improving food productivity, creating employment opportunities, and advancing the broader vision of prosperity for Delta State and Nigeria.

“To all stakeholders here today, let us continue to build a Delta State and a Nigeria where agriculture thrives, women are empowered, and prosperity is attainable for all.”

Also speaking at the event, Delta State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Val Arenyeka, underscored the essential role of farmers in ensuring food security, stressing that without farmers, there would be no food and urged the people to embrace farming for food sufficiency.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Harry Triakriowei, expressed appreciation to Mrs. Tinubu for including Delta youths in her Renewed Hope Initiative, aimed at improving food security and generating income through agriculture.

The event which was in partnership with the Governors’ Spouses Forum, World Health Organisation (WHO) and other donor agencies took place at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

“The MORE Agenda, under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is committed to the well-being of all Deltans, ensuring that childhood diseases and child mortality are reduced to the barest minimum through effective immunisation.

APPOINTMENT: Ignore Mischief Makers, NMU Staff Back Council

Staff of Nigeria Maritime University, NMU, Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu Kingdom,Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State have pooh-poohed falsehoods published by certain faceless individuals seeking to discredit the Council’s recent appointment of Principal Officers.

The staff gave backing to the excellent procedure that the University Council adopted to fill the vacant positions.

This was contained in a statement yesterday signed by Comrade Moses Oghenekome Ogege, Mr. Fine-Boy Doubra, Mrs. Sarah Kattey, Mr. Ossa, and Mr. Alen Igwe which was made available to media.

The NMU Staff said, “Their allegations are not only baseless but also a disservice to the truth and to the progress NMU has recorded under the current leadership.

“The process for the appointment of principal officers began in the Governing Council, where the advertisement document was approved.”

“Following this, notices were placed in two national newspapers, publicly inviting applications for the positions of Registrar,Bursar, and University Librarian, and everyone saw the advertisement, even on the university’s official staff platform.

“Later on, a Selection Committee was constituted by the Council, alongside the approval for the engagement of three independent consultants, one each assigned to the three positions.

“The consultants worked closely with the committee, and after a rigorous and transparent interview process, three top-performing candidates were recommended to the Council. As expected, the highest-scoring candidates were duly appointed.

“This process was a model of fairness and due process. It adhered strictly to principles of merit and integrity. One, therefore, wonders what the anonymous authors of these claims consider lacking in transparency.

“The Nigeria Maritime University community is fully pleased with the decisions of the Governing Council.

“The entire staff stand in firm support of the Council’s direction, particularly its efforts to strengthen the university through competent leadership and institutional reforms. A visitation to the university campus will show how much the outcome from the Council is being celebrated.

“In recognition of these achievements, the NMU staff have unanimously passed a vote of confidence on all members of the Governing Council, with special commendation to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Alhaji Abdulahi Bardi, whose visionary leadership has been central to the university’s upward trajectory.”

The NMU Staff condemned attempt to mislead the public and sow discord within the academic environment.

They noted that, “NMU is a place of excellence, not a space for baseless propaganda or anonymous blackmail. The progress recorded here is not speculative, it is visible, measurable, and verifiable.

“The Nigeria Maritime University remains committed to its mission of building a world-class maritime institution that serves the needs of the nation and the global maritime industry.

“We urge the media, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard the unfounded publication and continue to support the laudable achievements being recorded under the present Council.” They added.

EFCC Warn Nigerians Against Ponzi Schemes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised alarm over the growing menace of Ponzi schemes in Nigeria, warning that the get-rich-quick mindset was destroying lives and undermining national development.

The call was made by the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC, Aisha Abubakar in Enugu, during the 2025 Annual Management Retreat of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The event, themed “Developing Leadership for a New Paradigm,” was attended by 140 senior NSCDC personnel from across the State.

Speaking on the topic “Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome and the Youth Vulnerability: The Case Study of Ponzi Scheme. The Role of Law Enforcement in Prevention and Disruption,” Abubakar decried the growing desperation among Nigerian youths to attain instant wealth through illegitimate means.

She attributed this trend to social media influence, peer pressure, and the disappearance of traditional societal values.

“They often fall victim to enticing schemes that promise double returns within short timeframes, despite lacking any legitimate business operations”, Abubakar stated.

Abubakar highlighted several factors fueling the get-rich-quick mentality, including financial illiteracy, peer and social pressure, excessive exposure to digital platforms, drug use, depression, impatience, and a culture of lavish lifestyles.

She warned that these factors, combined with frustration over the slow pace of traditional success paths, have created fertile ground for fraudsters.

Citing notable examples, Abubakar referenced failed Ponzi operations such as MMM Nigeria, MBA Forex, Chinmark Group, and most recently, CBEX, a digital asset trading platform that collapsed in April 2025.

CBEX had promised investors a 100% return within 30 days by claiming to leverage cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence-driven strategies. Its crash left thousands of Nigerians financially stranded.

She further classified types of get-rich-quick schemes, including advance fee fraud, fake job and scholarship offers, online loan and grant scams, and fraudulent forex and cryptocurrency platforms.

Cybercrime, she added, remains a significant by-product of this mindset, with severe implications for Nigeria’s international reputation and economy.

“Cybercrime has created a market where fraudsters drive out legitimate businesses. The resulting damage has discouraged foreign investment and fostered organized crime and terrorism. “It undermines national security and erodes global confidence in Nigerians”, she said.

On the role of the EFCC in combating these threats, Abubakar noted that the Commission continues to drive prevention through awareness campaigns, digital outreach, and collaborations.

“Through roadshows, social media campaigns, and partnerships with youth-focused institutions, the EFCC is raising awareness of fraudulent investment schemes.

“We also work with the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Securities and Exchange Commission, banks, and international organizations like INTERPOL to trace illicit funds and disrupt scam networks”, she said.

The EFCC’s warning comes amid increasing public concern over the growing number of financial scams targeting vulnerable Nigerians, especially in digital spaces.

The agency advised the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious schemes.

DOPF Calls For Establishment Of Functional, Grassroots- Oriented Community Security Corps

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has called on the Delta State House of Assembly to enact an entirely new legal framework for the establishment of a functional, grassroots-oriented Community Security Corps, declaring that the previous law was never implemented and has therefore failed in its purpose.

This position was articulated in a comprehensive memorandum submitted by the Forum at a public hearing convened by the House Joint Committee on Bills, chaired by the Majority Leader, Hon. Engr. Emeka Nwaobi, Ph.D, and the Committee on Peace and Security, led by Hon. Chief Isaac Anwuzia, Ph.D. The hearing took place on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Press Centre of the Assembly Complex in Asaba.

Represented by its Vice Chairman, Mr. Chukwudi Abiandu, and member Christy Agboje, the Forum described the existing legislation as ineffective and obsolete, citing the absence of an implementation mechanism, undefined operational structures, and a failure to include critical stakeholders. DOPF insisted that the task before the lawmakers should not be treated as a mere amendment but as a complete legislative rebirth to fill glaring security gaps across Delta’s communities.

Applauding the Assembly’s resolve to revisit the issue, the Forum said the move was courageous and timely, particularly in view of rising insecurity at the grassroots level. It presented wide-ranging proposals for the new bill, including the creation of a clearly defined governance structure, the integration of a dedicated media and communications unit, and the recruitment of personnel through local government channels.

The Forum also emphasized the need for robust and sustainable funding, to be derived from statutory allocations and strategic corporate partnerships. It further called for the involvement of traditional rulers, civil society, youth groups, women, and media professionals in both the state and local advisory councils of the proposed agency to ensure inclusiveness, transparency, and grassroots ownership.

DOPF proposed a phased implementation approach, with full operational presence of the agency to be achieved within 12 months of the new law’s enactment. It emphasized the importance of legislative oversight, performance review, and media collaboration to guarantee the success of the corps.

Reaffirming its readiness to support public sensitization and legislative engagement efforts, the Forum stressed that the new law must uphold human rights, reflect local realities, and conform to international best practices in community policing.

It will be recalled that the Forum had, in a communiqué issued at the end of its Audience Participatory Programme held on November 12, 2020, with the theme “Aftermath of #EndSARS Protest: The Way Forward,” first called for proactive security reforms across the country. The advocacy continued during a courtesy visit to the current Speaker of the House on September 25, 2024, where DOPF reiterated the need to implement the community security law passed by the 7th Assembly. At its 5th Annual Lecture, held on November 20, 2024, the Forum spotlighted local implementation solutions as a central theme, expanding its campaign for improved security mechanisms not only in Delta State but throughout the country.

Also, in a recent press release, DOPF urged governors, especially those in the southern region, to urgently treat security as a strategic priority, warning that the surge of insecurity was fast advancing into the South.

Uzum Identifies Selfishness, Greed As Banes Of Delta Politics

By JOHNSON EBIGIDE

Eugene Azuka Uzum has identified selfishness and greed among the political class as responsible for the suffering of the people in Delta State.

Uzum, a lawyer, policy analyst, youth advocate and politician, stated this in Asaba while felicitating Christians on the celebration of Easter.

He said that politicians in the state should embrace the spirit of selflessness as exemplified by Christ in their daily life, adding that selfishness and greed among the political class had not only wreck havocs and suffering among the people in the state, but that the twin menace had reduced competence and capacity of individuals in the political class to laughing stock.

Uzum maintained that self-centeredness of the rulling class since 1999 had continued to widen the gap between the government and the people, so much so that even the unborn are no longer interested in any occupation than hijacking political power by all means in the state, adding that it was unfortunate that the youths had been brainwashed into accepting the wrong perspectives in the state.

While calling for a paradigm shift in the mentality of the political leadership in the state, Uzum enjoined the youths to think of their future and avoid being engulfed in the snares of those that were merely window dressing them up for a bleak future through selfishness, greed and anti-people orientation and machinations in the state.
