The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku has said that the May Day Celebration is an opportunity for workers to celebrate themselves, adding that workers in the State should come out enmasse to showcase their strength on Sunday or Monday depending on the sighting of the moon to avoid clash with the Sallah celebration.
He made this statement during the State Executive Council meeting on Friday, 29th April, 2022, at the Labour House while briefing members of SEC who are SAC members and Chairmen and Secretaries of affiliate unions.
Ofobruku insisted that it is the responsibility of affiliate unions to mobilize their members, maintaining that Labour Day is an annual event which workers are expected to look forward to in order to showcase their strength, their resilience and their capacity as Nigerian workers.
The Chairman used the medium to eulogize the Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa whom he described as workers friendly and listening Governor.
Mr. Ofobruku posited that in some States, Governors do not identify with Labour activities, thereby appreciating Okowa for always encouraging and supporting workers in every of their mandate events.
The eloquent Chairman also used the opportunity to caution affiliate unions to stop holding delegate conferences without inviting the NLC as parent body to give goodwill messages or supervise their elections.
He therefore notified the SEC-in-Session of the National Executive Council’s decision to get Labour involved in politics in the interest of workers and the development of Nigerian economy.
On the strength of the above, he informed SEC that the Union had introduced political committees into its organs of operation, and on the basis of this, two members from Delta State Council – Comrades (Chief) Victor Uchuno and Fidel Emeni had been appointed respectively as Chairman and Secretary of the Political Committee for Delta State Council. Their role is to galvanise and coordinate workers to advance their supports to credible and sincere politicians ready to pursue the yearnings and aspirations of workers in line with mustering the political will to take Nigeria out of the woods.
