Axxela: Umuseti Community Refutes Emu-Ebendo Land Ownership Claim

…Axxela Will Create Job, Attract Devt In Our Community, Says Umuseti Indigenes

High Chief Emmanuel Akpe of Umuseti Community has debunked the ownership claims by Emu Ebendo community of an area of land bought by Axxela Company.

Chief Akpe made this known while speaking with journalists at Umuseti in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State.

He said the land in question belongs to Umuseti and was not in any contestable.

“It should be noted that Umuseti Community welcomes Axxela company into her land”.

According to him, “the operation of Axxela is gas processing which has every capacity to stop gas flaring and its pollutant effects. The company from our understanding will be of immense benefit not only in employment but also in generating internally generated revenue for the state and federal government”.

Speaking, he said the community like other places in Ndokwa-land operates family ownership of land holders system with exemption to few areas belonging generally to the community.

In a statement issued to Journalists, it was revealed that the area of land sold to Axxela belongs to Umu-Mgbor family in Umuseti from time immemorial and have since then been in their possession without any form of interference from anyone or community.

It also stated that there was due diligence by Axxela company before the purchase because they made inquiries from relevant government agencies in the state as well as from those who live and farm in the area.

He added that even after the purchase, all payments for loss of economic crops were paid only to members of Umu-Mgbor family and no one else. It is therefore shocking to see our brothers from Emu Ebendo coming from a distance of about four kilometer to claim ownership of a land area with houses and other economic activities for over one hundred years.

Speaking to Journalist at the the site, Okwa Akwaligbe Peter said he was surprised by the actions of his brothers from Emu Ebendo who had in the past been caretakers of their land.

Chief Ezeukwu added that they had annually collected royalties from their tenants without challenge.

He revealed that one of the old building close to the land was Umuseti INEC Unit 27 voting centre where they had since 1999 casted their votes.

He said Axxela acquired the land rightly from Umuseti and they were ready to defend the Company to do thier work as they will bring development and employ not only their people but the Emu Ebendo indigenes.

‘We will not condone any attempt by anyone to frustrate thier effort, we urge Axxela to continue thier legal operation as we are behind them”, he said.

He said issue of court judgement with Obodogba had nothing to do with Umuseti and neither were they party to thier matter.

OKUAMA: A Community In Ruins, A Nation In Silence One Year After Nigerian Army Invasion

… A year of pain, unanswered questions

One year after the Nigerian Army invaded Okuama, a once-thriving community in Delta State, the scars of that fateful day remain raw.

What began as a military operation quickly turned into an episode of destruction, displacement, and death.

Today, the residents of Okuama are left with shattered homes, broken spirits, and an overwhelming sense of abandonment. The echoes of gunfire have faded, but the trauma lingers.

The Invasion: A War Against Who?

The military operation in Okuama was justified by authorities as a response to the killing of soldiers deployed to the area.

However, the scale and intensity of the military’s retaliation raised serious questions about proportionality and accountability.

Witnesses recounted how soldiers stormed the community, burning homes, arresting men indiscriminately, and forcing women and children to flee into the forests.

Human rights organizations decried the excessive force, calling for an independent investigation into the incident.

Yet, one year later, no comprehensive report has been released, and no government official has taken responsibility for the destruction inflicted on innocent civilians.

Okuama Today: A Town Forgotten

A visit to Okuama today reveals a ghost town. Many families remain displaced, struggling to rebuild their lives with little to no government assistance.

The local economy, once driven by fishing and agriculture, has collapsed. Schools and hospitals that once served the community remain non-functional.

Survivors of the invasion speak in hushed tones, fearful of reprisal should they share their stories.

“We lost everything,” says a displaced elder who now lives in a makeshift camp in a neighboring town. “The government has moved on, but we are still suffering.”

The Nigerian Government’s Deafening Silence

Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the Okuama invasion is the lack of official acknowledgment from the Nigerian government. No public apologies, no reparations, no visible efforts to rebuild the community.

Instead, the event has been buried under a pile of other national crises, forgotten by those in power but painfully remembered by those who lived through it.

The silence speaks volumes about Nigeria’s approach to military excesses. It raises concerns about whether the government prioritizes justice and civilian protection or if it condones the army’s unchecked actions in conflict zones.

The Need for Accountability

A year later, one thing is clear: Okuama deserves justice. An independent investigation must be conducted to uncover the full extent of human rights violations during the invasion.

The victims must be compensated, and those responsible for indiscriminate attacks on civilians should be held accountable.

As Nigeria moves forward, it must reckon with the ghosts of Okuama. Until justice is served, the wounds inflicted on that community will remain a stain on the nation’s conscience.
