Girl, 9, Exonerates Guardian of Alleged Abuse

By Barr. Awele Ideal/ Patrick Ochei.

A nine year old girl named Faith, from Ebonyi State, has exonerated her guardian, one Mrs. Chika Nwankwo living around Midwifery Market, Okpanam, from any form of abuse.

She told two members of the Delta State Child’s Rights Implementation Committee – Barr. Awele Ideal and Comrade Patrick Ochei that the aunt whom she refers to as mother never beats her nor starves her.

Faith further confided confidently in the Child Protectors that she only does sweeping and fetching of water for the aunt, and that she was happy living with her.

Equally, Mrs. Nwankwo denied any allegation of maltreatment on the girl, saying that she is her uncle’s daughter that she brought few months ago to help reduce the burden of bringing her up on the parents.

She said that she planned registering her in a less expensive private school by next academic session, because as at the time she came, the last academic term had already gone far.

Meanwhile, members from the Child Protection office were satisfied that the woman didn’t tell lies and that the child did not show signs of one being maltreated or abused.

They only cautioned the woman to disallow the girl from doing house chores that are higher than her capacity while urging her to continue to treat her as her own child.

It could be recalled that a concerned neighbour had sent a video of the girl carrying a big iron bucket of water, which suggested that she was being used for child labour.

While the girl admitted to doing some domestic work like sweeping and fetching of water alone, she said she only used bigger bucket to fetch water when she broke the smaller plastic bucket, which invariably she was advised against the use of it by her guardian.

By Onoriode Etatsemi

The Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN has said that as a government that stands for probity, it would do what was necessary to ensure that laws of the State are fully implemented and operationalized.

He stated this in Asaba when members of Global Peace Development led by its Executive Director, Mr. Ebruke Onajite Esike paid him an advocacy visit.

Represented by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in Ministry, Mr. Omamuzo Erebe, the Attorney-General, said that the Delta State Government will always act in accordance with best practices worldwide.

Ohwovoriole stated that the Ministry would review the request for a whistle-blower protection provision in the law and If at the end of the review, it finds that such a provision was necessary to give the law the necessary impetus, it would make the necessary recommendations to the state government.

He told the group that the process of law making was the responsibility of the State House of Assembly, stating that a Bill could proceed to the House of Assembly as a private member’s Bill or an Executive Bill.

The Attorney-General assured the group of its commitment to seek the necessary approval to prepare the whistleblower Bill if the need arises.

Earlier, the Executive Director of Global Peace Development, Mr. Ebruke Onajite Esike said that the purpose of the advocacy visit was to seek the support of the Ministry of Justice for the effective operationalization of the Delta State Public Financial Management Law 2022.

According to him, the law was crucial for effective financial management, economic stability, public trust, and accelerated development premised on demand and supply equilibrium and sustainable peace.

He noted that despite the existence of the public financial management law 2022, its operationalization has not been effective. He stated that the law lacked a whistleblower protection policy provision to protect citizens against reprisal attacks when poorly executed and / or abandoned projects were reported to the Government.

Onajite said that the Ministry’s support was crucial in the enactment and domestication of the whistleblower protection law that would foster a culture of transpar byency and accountability as well as building of public trust on the government and political office holders.

Delta Online Publishers Forum Calls For Immediate Action Against Rising Insecurity In Delta State

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) expresses grave concern over the alarming increase in kidnapping incidents and herder attacks in Delta State, particularly Delta Central and Delta North. We call upon the Nigerian Police Force and all relevant security agencies to intensify their efforts in curbing these menaces that threaten the peace and security of our communities.

In a statement issued and signed by the Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Enebeli and his Secretary, Mr. Shedrack Onitsha, it stated that in recent weeks, there has been a disturbing surge in kidnapping activities, particularly in state major highways, Sapele-Effurrun road, the East-west Road between Agbarho and Ughelli and between Ughelli/Patani, hardly a day passes without reported cases of kidnap and armed robbery attacks on the routes. Traveling through these roads is like daring your fate, because it takes a miracle to pass unhurt.

A once peaceful community, Egbo-Urhe in the Ughelli South Local Government Area, is currently under siege by kidnappers. From Ughelli to Effurun, Sapele, Oghara, Abraka and Agbor, nowhere is safe as kidnappers pick their victims lick hawk. Families are living in fear, businesses are suffering, and the overall safety of our citizens is at stake.

The DOPF urges the Inspector General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to deploy additional resources and personnel to the affected areas to ensure the protection of lives and property. It is imperative that swift and decisive action is taken to dismantle these criminal networks and restore confidence in our security apparatus.

We also appeal to the State Government support the security agencies with logistics and other tools to enhance intelligence gathering and community policing initiatives, which are crucial in preventing these crimes before they occur. The collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups should be strengthened to create a formidable defense against these threats.

Furthermore, the DOPF calls on the state government to engage in meaningful dialogue with herder communities to address the underlying issues contributing to these attacks. Sustainable solutions must be found to foster peaceful coexistence and prevent future conflicts. Today, most Deltans are facing starvations because they can’t go to their farms without being attacked.

The safety and security of our citizens are paramount, and we must all work together to put an end to these acts of violence and ensure a safe and prosperous Delta State.

Gbandi Slams Idris Over Political Dishonesty

The National Deputy Chairman (Diaspora Engagement) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and senatorial candidate for Delta North in the 2023 general election, Hon. Dr. Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, has totally condemned the defection of the member representing Ijumu/Kabba-Bunu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Salman Idris from ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gbandi made this known in a press release made available to The Hill Nigeria.

He likened Idris defection to Judas Iscariot, stating that he had betrayed the Party and electorates who in confidence of his effective representation gave him their votes under the flagship of ADC during the general election, for his personal gain.

While describing Idris action as a stark act of political dishonesty, Gbandi called that he resigns, contest again under the platform of APC and be strip off his title as ‘honorable’ as he had failed the people of his constituency and the public who entrusted so much confidence in him.

In a powerful message to the media, Gbandi announced that Salman Idris’ name has been added to a growing list of political turncoats who should be removed from office. He called for a robust recall initiative led by ADC Youths and the ADC Diaspora Network, in collaboration with the people of goodwill in Kogi State, to ensure that Idris is held accountable for his actions. This recall initiative, he said is not just about one politician but about sending a clear message that such betrayals will not be tolerated.

He harped on the need for political accountability, integrity and a broader struggle for the soul of Nigerian democracy, Gbandi said he and his supporters will mobilize to reclaim the mandate given to the ADC, adding that the political landscape must be cleansed of those who treat public office as a mere stepping stone for personal advancement at the expense of the electorate’s trust.

While calling on the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen to declare Idris’ seat vacant, he said failure to do that, will amount to his setting a dangerous precedent that could encourage further political betrayals and undermine the stability of party politics in Nigeria and also placing the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy is under threat.
