Ika Igbo Communities in Edo Demand Inclusion in Proposed Anioma State Creation

…Support Anioma State Creation zoning to South-East

…Make Passionate Appeal to FG, NASS and Relevant Stakeholders

The Ika Igbo communities in Edo State, under the leadership and coordination of Apostle Azuka Okah, have openly declared their full and unwavering support for the creation of Anioma State and its zoning to the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

This was as they demanded to be included in the proposed Anioma State.

They said that this position reflects years of accumulated frustration, neglect, and marginalization experienced by Ika Igbo–speaking communities such as Iru, Igbanke, Ogbagie, Igbo-Giri, Owa Ri Uzo, Otobaye, Oghada, Ute-Oha,-Eze, Ekpon and  other neighboring Ika Igbo aboriginal communities within Edo State.

According to them,  recognizing Anioma as a South-East State would not only address marginalization but also promote national unity, fairness and balanced development.

They made their position known at a well-attended gathering of the communities’ leaders, youths, elders, stakeholders and  representatives of these communities, held at Igbanke in Edo State.

Speaking on the platform of the Voice of the Indigenous Ika Igbo Initiative in Edo State, the people lamented that despite their cultural, linguistic, and historical affinity with Anioma communities in Delta State and the wider Igbo nation in the South-East, they have remained politically stranded and administratively neglected within Edo State.

This sense of abandonment, they claimed has persisted across successive administrations with little or no meaningful intervention from the state government.

They expressed deep frustration over the lack of basic infrastructure in their communities, highlighting  poor road networks, inadequate healthcare facilities, underfunded schools, lack of potable water, and the near absence of government-sponsored development projects.

These conditions, they noted, stand in sharp contrast to the resources generated from their areas and the taxes paid by their people, with little to show for it in terms of development or representation.

They argued that Ika Igbo communities  are among the most underdeveloped in Edo State, not because of a lack of potential or human capacity, but due to deliberate political marginalization and exclusion from decision-making processes. They lamented that their voices are often ignored, their needs overlooked, and their identity continuously suppressed in a state where they are treated as outsiders despite being indigenous to the land.

Culturally and historically, the Ika Igbo people reaffirmed their strong ties to Anioma communities in Delta State and the broader South-East, as  they share the same language, customs, festivals, traditional institutions, and worldview with their Anioma brothers and sisters.

“These shared values have survived colonial boundary adjustments and political realignments that forcefully placed them under Edo State administration. For decades, this artificial separation has continued to deny us a sense of belonging and fair representation.”

To be a part of Anioma State is therefore not driven by sentiment alone, but by a genuine desire for inclusion, equity, and development, they explained, adding that being part of Anioma State and zoned into the South-East would restore their cultural identity, strengthen political participation as well as open doors for targeted development initiatives that truly understand and reflect their realities.

“Anioma State creation would provide an opportunity to correct historical injustices suffered by Anioma and Ika Igbo communities scattered across Delta and Edo States. State creation is not just about drawing new boundaries, but about restoring dignity, self-worth and a sense of ownership in governance. It would also bring government closer to the people, ensuring that grassroots development becomes a priority rather than an afterthought.”

They acknowledged  the efforts of Senator Ned Nwoko, the lawmaker representing Delta North Senatorial District at the National Assembly over his advocacy which has rekindled hope among Anioma and Ika People across Nigeria. They lauded him for consistency, political courage, and strategic engagement at the national level in pushing for the realization of Anioma State. They described his efforts as visionary and timely, noting that for the first time in a long while, their long-standing aspirations are being taken seriously.

The people expressed confidence that with sustained support and unity among  them, the Anioma State project will eventually become a reality.

Thus, the communities passionately  appealed to the federal government, the National Assembly and other relevant institutions to listen to their cries and consider the overwhelming  support for Anioma State Creation.

In his address, Apostle Azuka Okah, Leader and Coordinator, Ika Igbo Speaking Communities in Edo State, had called for unity, peaceful advocacy, and strategic engagement with relevant authorities.

He urged the youths not to allow frustration to turn into violence but to channel their energy into constructive dialogue, awareness campaigns, and lawful agitation, noting that the struggle for Anioma State creation is a collective one that requires discipline, clarity of purpose, and unwavering commitment.

DTSG, NDDC, Chevron Move To Strengthen Partnership On Omadino–Okerenkoko–Escravos Road Project

The Delta State Government, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Chevron Nigeria Limited have moved to strengthen collaboration for the construction of the proposed Omadino–Okerenkoko–Escravos Road and Bridges project in Delta State.

The project, which spans about 70 kilometres and 29 bridges, is expected to significantly improve connectivity across riverine communities and stimulate economic development in the Niger Delta region.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori gave the assurance of the state government’s readiness to partner with the NDDC and Chevron during a meeting with the leadership of the commission and the oil company’s delegation at Government House, Asaba on Thursday.

Oborevwori commended the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Sam Ogbuku, for the progress recorded under his leadership and pledged Delta State’s commitment to ensuring the project becomes a reality.

The governor noted that the Omadino–Okerenkoko–Escravos Road was critical to the development of riverine communities and would open up the area for increased economic activities.

“We are ready to partner with NDDC on this project because it is very key to those living in the riverine areas. Delta State believes in executing projects that people will see and appreciate,” he said.

Oborevwori, however, stressed that the state government would only support the project if it was awarded to a reputable construction company capable of delivering it to completion without abandoning the work.

According to him, the state government would also set up a technical team to work with the NDDC and Chevron to review the project design, determine the current cost and outline the contributions expected from each stakeholder.

The governor said the team would also address issues such as right-of-way, realignment of sections of the road and other technical considerations necessary for the successful execution of the project.

He emphasized that Delta State had consistently demonstrated its willingness to support major infrastructure projects, including those initiated by the Federal Government, adding that the state was currently undertaking several strategic roads and flyover projects on federal roads across the state.

Earlier, Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Sam Ogbuku, said the commission and Chevron were in Delta State to brief the governor on the progress made in discussions regarding the project.

Ogbuku explained that the project was originally awarded by the commission many years ago but had remained incomplete, prompting the NDDC to explore partnerships as part of efforts to fulfil President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that all abandoned projects in the region be completed.

He said the Omadino–Okerenkoko–Escravos Road project would deliver enormous benefits to Delta State and the entire Niger Delta by improving access to remote communities and boosting economic activities.

“The benefit of this project to the region and to Delta State cannot be overemphasized. It is about 70 kilometres long with 29 bridges, and it will open up the area for socio-economic development,” he said.

Ogbuku added that Chevron had already secured approvals from its joint venture partners to participate in the project and that several meetings had been held between the parties to advance discussions.

He said technical teams from the NDDC, Delta State Government and Chevron would meet to validate the existing design, review project costs, and carry out environmental and geotechnical studies.

According to him, the stakeholders would also conduct community engagements to address right-of-way issues and other concerns that could affect the implementation of the project.

Speaking on behalf of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Dr. Segun Kuteyi expressed the company’s readiness to partner with the NDDC and Delta State Government to deliver the project.

Kuteyi noted that Chevron had operated in Nigeria for more than six decades and remained committed to supporting infrastructure development in communities within its areas of operation.

He said the proposed road would enhance connectivity between Warri and Escravos and provide significant benefits to communities and institutions in the region.

According to him, facilities such as the Nigerian Maritime University in Okerenkoko, as well as emerging small and medium-scale enterprises, would benefit immensely from the road project.

Kuteyi stressed that the successful execution of the project would require strong collaboration among all stakeholders, including the Delta State Government, the NDDC, Chevron and its joint venture partners.

He added that Chevron was committed to building the necessary partnerships that would ensure the safe and timely delivery of the project, which is expected to take several years to complete due to its scale and challenging terrain.

The stakeholders agreed to establish a joint technical committee that would determine the final cost of the project, review the design to reflect current realities and outline the contributions of all participating parties before the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the commencement of the project.

International Women’s Day Lecture: NIPR Delta Advocates Gender Inclusion, Ethical Communication

The Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender inclusion, professional development and ethical communication as key drivers of sustainable development.

This formed the focus of the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration organised by the chapter at Hussey College, Warri, where stakeholders, communication professionals and students gathered to reflect on the theme “Give to Gain.”

Delivering the keynote lecture titled “Positioning NIPR Delta State as a Leader in Advocacy for Gender Inclusion, Development and Ethical Communication in Line with ‘Give to Gain’,” educationist and Chartered Human Resource Consultant, Dr. Ejayeta Jeroh, stressed the need for deliberate actions to empower women and create inclusive opportunities across sectors.

Dr. Jeroh noted that empowering women produces far-reaching benefits for families, communities and nations, emphasising that women remain critical contributors to social and economic development.

He described advocacy as the act of supporting and defending causes in order to influence policies and drive positive social change. According to him, advocacy often involves strategic engagement such as awareness campaigns, research and policy dialogue aimed at shaping decisions within government, institutions and communities.
Speaking further, the lecturer explained that gender inclusion involves ensuring that individuals have equal rights, opportunities and access to resources regardless of gender. He added that inclusive systems must address barriers that limit women’s participation in leadership, employment and decision-making processes.

Dr. Jeroh also highlighted the importance of continuous professional development, urging practitioners to improve their competence through training, mentorship and professional certifications. He stressed that ethical communication, anchored on honesty, transparency, respect and accountability remains essential in strengthening trust and credibility within the public relations profession.

In his remarks at the event, the Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of NIPR, Mr. Godfrey C. Osakwe, fnipr, said the celebration provided an opportunity to recognise the immense contributions of women to the growth of the public relations profession and society at large.

“Today offers us another meaningful opportunity to celebrate the immense contributions of women to the growth of our profession, our institutions, our families and our society. Indeed, when women rise, society gains,” he said.

Osakwe noted that women across Nigeria and the world have continued to demonstrate resilience, leadership and commitment to excellence in various sectors including governance, business, education and communication.

He paid tribute to women whose dedication and professionalism continue to shape a better society, noting that inclusive leadership remains vital for sustainable development.

According to him, the theme “Give to Gain” reflects the importance of investing in women through education, opportunities, resources and leadership platforms.

“When women are empowered, they strengthen families, nurture responsible communities and help build stronger institutions. Their impact extends beyond individual success and contributes significantly to societal transformation,” he said.

The NIPR chairman further urged public relations practitioners to continue advocating policies and narratives that promote gender inclusion and equity across all sectors.

He also congratulated women in Delta State, Nigeria and across the world for their contributions to nation-building, particularly those recognised during the event for their dedication to service and leadership.

Earlier in his lecture, Dr. Jeroh had noted that the NIPR, established in 1963 and chartered by law to regulate public relations practice in Nigeria, plays a crucial role in promoting professional standards, training practitioners and enforcing ethical conduct within the industry.

The educationist and Chartered Human Resource Consultant urged the Delta State chapter to leverage its human capital and communication platforms, particularly social media, to strengthen advocacy for gender inclusion and ethical communication while positioning the chapter as a leader in professional development.

A recipient of the NIPR award, Dr. Doris Amaka Ochei expressed deep gratitude to the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Delta State Chapter for honoring her with an Award of Excellence for philanthropic service and advocacy. She highlighted the theme “Give to Gain,” explaining that selfless giving of time, resources, and compassion leads to lasting impact and stronger communities.

Through the DAO Foundation, she has supported community development by providing clean water through solar-powered boreholes, improving school environments, empowering the less privileged, offering medical support, alleviating poverty, and rehabilitating market infrastructure.

She emphasized that true leadership is rooted in service and empathy, especially in supporting women, girls, and vulnerable communities. Dr. Ochei dedicated the award to everyone who has supported the mission and reaffirmed her commitment to continue serving humanity and uplifting lives.

In her remarks, the CEO and Founder of the EMT Foundation, Deaconess Dr. Mrs. Esther Tonlagha, who was represented by Dcns Harriet Mayuku, appreciated the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Delta State Chapter, for recognizing the foundation during the International Women’s Day celebration. She commended the institute for providing a platform that highlights the important role women play in shaping society.

Speaking on the theme “Give to Gain,” Tonlagha emphasized that true success lies not only in what people receive but also in what they give through mentorship, support and opportunities for others. She noted that the EMT Foundation continues to empower women and vulnerable groups through health awareness, education, youth development and economic empowerment programmes, encouraging women to support one another and inspiring young women to believe in their potential.

Also remarking, the Principal of Hussey College Warri, Mrs. Justina Wategire, who was represented by her Vice principal academic, Mrs. Edigbe E. Paulina, thanked NIPR for bringing the program to Hussey College Warri.

Highlight of the event was a discussion panel session, where the discussants harped on the need for women to be protected and given a place in the society, adding that their dire passion to give to the society was worth appreciating.

The event featured cash presentation to students and award presentations to Dr. Doris Amaka Ochei and Dcns (Mrs) Esther Tonlagha in recognition for their contributions to philanthropy and humanitarian services.

Delta Online Publishers Forum IWD Celebration: Digital Storytelling Key to Women Empowerment, Says Gbemudu, Unobunjo, Ikolomi, Nzemeka

Speakers at the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration organised by the Delta Online Publishers Forum have emphasized the importance of digital storytelling in empowering women and promoting societal development.

Delivering the keynote address, the guest speaker, Mrs. Patricia Gbemudu, said when individuals give their voices, time, platforms and support to others, society benefits greatly. She noted that digital storytelling provides visibility for women who are making significant contributions in sectors such as business, education, healthcare, agriculture and community development but often go unnoticed.

Gbemudu explained that documenting women’s experiences digitally helps preserve knowledge for future generations and also creates opportunities for mentorship, partnerships and economic growth. She therefore urged media practitioners, organizations and professionals to intentionally provide platforms, training and mentorship that will enable women to share their stories and maximize digital opportunities.

In her goodwill message, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter, Comrade Sonia Unobunjo, described the theme of the event, “Give to Gain,” as a reminder that investing in women through education, mentorship and opportunities leads to stronger communities and sustainable development. Amuyiwa praised the resilience and contributions of women in Delta State and across Nigeria, stressing that empowering women remains a critical step toward building stronger families, communities and societies.

She noted that every opportunity given to a woman represents an investment in national development, urging stakeholders to prioritise policies and initiatives that support women and protect the rights of the girl-child.
The NCWS president also encouraged women to support one another rather than undermine themselves, stressing the need for unity, mentorship and collective advocacy among women

The speakers collectively called on media professionals, leaders and organizations to invest in digital literacy, create platforms for women’s voices and support initiatives that promote gender equality, noting that when women are empowered, society as a whole progresses.

Earlier, in an address read by the Secretary of the Organising Committee for the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration, Mrs Josephine Omodion, a call was made for stronger support and collaboration in empowering women through digital storytelling

2027: ‘No Vacancy in Government House Till 2031’ — Amori Fires Strong Warning to Opposition

By Joelson Wilson

As political activities begin to intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Chief Adviser to the Governor of Delta State, Ighoyota Amori, has issued a firm and unequivocal warning to opposition figures, declaring that the Delta State Government House will remain occupied by the current administration until 2031.

Amori’s remarks come in the wake of the recently concluded Ward and State Congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country, including Delta State. With attention now shifting toward the upcoming zonal congresses and national convention scheduled for March, political observers are closely watching unfolding developments within the party.

The congresses in Delta State were largely peaceful, but the noticeable absence of some key party figures; including former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, former Delta State Governor James Ibori, and House of Representatives member Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu; has sparked speculation among political analysts about potential strategies ahead of the party’s primaries.

Some observers believe the trio may be planning a surprise political move as the APC approaches its internal nomination processes. However, Amori dismissed such speculation, insisting that there is no division within the party in Delta State.

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, Amori maintained that the APC in Delta remains united and focused, emphasizing that the congresses were conducted in an atmosphere of consultation and consensus.
“There is no crisis whatsoever in the APC in Delta State,” Amori said. “The Ward and State Congresses were conducted peacefully, and all stakeholders were duly consulted before decisions were taken. The party adopted consensus because everyone was carried along.”

According to him, the leadership approach of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has been central to maintaining harmony within the party.
“The governor believes strongly in consultation. He understands that power is transient and that leadership must involve everyone. Before becoming governor, he served as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, so he knows the importance of inclusive politics,” Amori noted.

Amori, widely regarded as one of Delta’s most seasoned political strategists, has played significant roles in the political architecture of the state for more than two decades. He served in the administration of former Governor James Ibori between 1999 and 2007 as Commissioner for Education, Senior Political Adviser, and later Commissioner for Water Resources.
Over the years, his political influence has been instrumental in shaping electoral victories for successive administrations in the state.
Political watchers often describe Amori as a “political Hercules” due to his deep grassroots connections and strategic role in electoral mobilization across Delta State.

Amori used the opportunity to send what many interpreted as a direct warning to opposition forces contemplating a challenge in the next governorship race.
“There is no space in Delta State Government House for another governor until 2031,” he declared emphatically. “As far as Delta State is concerned, the APC will win all contested positions; from ward level to the federal level.”

He argued that the current administration has made campaigning easier for the party due to the developmental strides recorded since Governor Oborevwori assumed office on May 29, 2023.
“The governor has combined political intelligence with visible developmental projects across the state. That has already made the campaign for 2027 much easier,” he said.

Amori highlighted several initiatives and infrastructure projects undertaken by the Oborevwori administration, noting that they have strengthened public confidence in the government.
He cited the groundbreaking ceremony of the Otovwodo Flyover in Ughelli North Local Government Area as one example of the administration’s commitment to development.
“At the groundbreaking ceremony, the governor openly told the people that the state has resources and that more funds have been made available to Delta. That means Deltans should expect even more projects,” Amori stated.
He also referenced the recent maiden convocation ceremony of Southern Delta University in Ozoro, where the governor reportedly approved several requests made by the institution’s management on the spot.
“That is a governor who is clearly in a hurry to develop every sector of the state,” Amori added.

Amori concluded by asserting that the outcome of the 2027 election will ultimately be determined by the people of Delta State, not by political propaganda or media speculation.
“I will say it again, there are no factions of APC in Delta State,” he said. “The media may twist stories to create attention, but the reality on the ground is that there is only one APC in Delta state and one candidate for governorship in 2027.”

He added, “Anyone who wants to contest against the governor will have to manufacture stories to convince the people. But it will not work either. It is the people of Delta State, those who have benefited from the projects of this administration, that will decide their governor.”

According to Amori, the administration’s achievements remain open for public scrutiny.
“You cannot argue with facts,” he stressed. “The scorecard of this government is available for everyone to see and verify.”

With the APC’s internal processes moving toward the zonal congresses and national convention, analysts say Delta State could become one of the most closely watched political theatres in the run-up to the 2027 elections.

However, if Amori’s confident declaration is anything to go by, the ruling political establishment in the state appears determined to consolidate its hold on power, and ready to confront any opposition challenge head-on.

Oborevwori Inaugurates 4.8km Oko-Amakom/Oko-Obiokpu Road as Ukah Highlights Infrastructure Progress

By Chibuzor Kingsley

Residents of the Delta State Capital Territory witnessed another milestone in infrastructural development on Friday, March 6, 2026, as the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, inaugurated the 4.8-kilometre Oko-Amakom/Oko-Obiokpu Road and other connecting road networks in Asaba.

The project, which is expected to significantly improve movement within the capital territory, forms part of the state government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure and enhancing connectivity for residents.

Speaking during the inauguration, the Director-General of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA), Mr Patrick Ukah, described the project as a major step toward improving transportation and opening up more communities within the capital city for development.

Mr Ukah noted that the completion of the road network would ease traffic movement, boost economic activities and improve the overall living conditions of residents in the benefiting communities.
