You Matter Foundation Empowers Special-Needs Children With Free Care, Wheelchairs, and Support Tools

In a major show of support for children with special needs, the Wife of the Governor of Delta State and Founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, Her Excellency Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, on Thursday, November 27, 2025, donated free medication, wheelchairs, and a wide range of assistive and educational devices to beneficiaries during the flag-off of a free medical outreach for special-needs children and their caregivers in Ughelli, Delta Central.

The outreach organised by the You Matter Charity Foundation in partnership with the Delta State Ministry of Health and the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency, featured medical check-ups, nutrition counselling, disability support services, and distribution of mobility and learning tools designed to enhance independence, access to care, and overall wellbeing.

Speaking to parents and caregivers at the event, Deaconess Oborevwori made a passionate appeal for an end to the culture of hiding children with special needs, describing the practice as harmful and rooted in ignorance. She emphasised that no child should be isolated or denied visibility, care, and affection.

“It is not their fault. Every child deserves love, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive,” she said. She expressed deep concern over the widespread stigma surrounding autism and other developmental conditions, noting that many children are kept away from school and medical care due to fear of judgement.

“Autistic people are everyday people who live among us. Autism is not a spiritual problem or an illness looking for a cure. It is a condition that can be managed with understanding, compassion, and the right professional support,” she explained.

The First Lady stated that the state-wide medical outreach is designed not only to provide care but also to raise awareness, confront misinformation, and encourage parents to seek early help. She urged mothers to show courage by bringing their children forward for support rather than hiding them.

Her Excellency reiterated her Foundation’s commitment to advocating for children with special needs and called on families, community groups, and institutions to work together in building a more inclusive Delta State.

Delivering health talks at the programme, Dr. Ifeoma Udeh, Consultant Paediatrician at Asaba Specialist Hospital, warned that about 50 percent of Nigerian children are micronutrient deficient, citing economic pressure, poor feeding choices, and cultural beliefs as major contributors. She stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and early nutrition.

Similarly, Dr. Bolum-Okolie Angela, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist, echoed the First Lady’s message and urged parents to prioritise education, healthcare, and emotional support for children living with disabilities, noting that early intervention significantly improves long-term outcomes.

Medical personnel were on ground to conduct examinations and offer professional guidance, as the outreach continued the Foundation’s mission of bringing hope, visibility, and essential support to children with special needs across Delta State.

DOPF Lecture Series: Emudainohwo Applauds Tax Reform as Catalyst for Economic Diversification

A University don, Dr. Ochuko Emudainohwo, has hailed the 2025 tax law as a strategic blueprint for inclusive economic growth, capable of repositioning Nigeria for a more diversified and resilient economic future.

He called on stakeholders, businesses, policymakers, and citizens alike to embrace the reform and contribute to a more accountable and sustainable fiscal environment for the overall development of the country.

Dr. Emudainohwo, FCA, an Associate Professor of Accounting at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, who was a Guest Speaker at the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) 2025 Lecture Series held in Asaba with the theme “Nigeria’s New Tax Law: Implications and Opportunities for Businesses and Society,” unpacked the rationale, structure, and benefits of the recently enacted 2025 tax law under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

He noted that taxation remains one of the strongest instruments for national development. According to him, to understand the essence of the new tax law, citizens must first appreciate the context in which it was introduced.

He outlined several key factors that necessitated the reform, including Nigeria’s declining oil revenue capacity, which has become increasingly insufficient to sustain national development; a rising population that continues to exert pressure on public services; and lingering economic shocks from the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed the fragility of the nation’s revenue system.

These challenges, he stressed, compelled the federal government to rethink its fiscal strategy and pursue a more sustainable and inclusive approach to revenue generation.

At the heart of the 2025 tax law, he noted, is the objective of reducing Nigeria’s overdependence on oil revenue.

Dr. Emudainohwo explained that the new framework consolidates income taxes and company taxes into a single tax net, streamlining compliance and reducing administrative bottlenecks.

He described the reform as “pro-people,” emphasizing that it was designed not only to boost government revenue but also to stimulate economic growth across various sectors.

“The law supports Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs). Companies with an annual turnover of less than N50 million are now exempted from capital-based taxes and company income taxes,” he stated.

This exemption, he argued, will ease the burden on small businesses, encourage entrepreneurship, and promote innovation.

Furthermore, Dr. Emudainohwo highlighted the law’s emphasis on transparency and modernization. By strengthening digital tax platforms, the new legislation enhances accountability, improves efficiency, and minimizes leakages within the revenue system.

DOPF 2025 Annual Retreat: Enebeli Charges Members to Uphold Digital Journalism Standards

…Inducts 12 New Members

The Chairman of Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), Mr. Emmanuel Enebeli, has charged members of the forum to uphold the ideals of the organisation and maintain the highest standards of digital journalism.

Enebeli gave the charge during the 2025 annual retreat of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) in Asaba.

While addressing the newly inducted members, he cautioned that membership should not be taken as a symbolic gesture but as an invitation to active participation and professional excellence in the state’s digital media space.

“Do not go home and sleep after joining this Forum because the membership of any website that remains inactive will be reviewed for necessary action.

“Do not use your platforms to attack people. Do not publish unverified reports. This is very important. We must work together to promote and grow DOPF”, he advised.

Enebeli emphasized that ethical conduct and factual reporting remained the hallmark of credible online publishing, noting that DOPF would continue to sanction practices that undermined public trust or damage the integrity of the profession.

The event featured two major lecture sessions led by industry experts; Mr. Philip Enu Nwossu and Prof. Presley Obukoadata.

Mr. Nwossu, in his presentation entitled, “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Public Communication and Governance in Nigeria”, explored the growing influence of AI-driven systems on information dissemination, transparency, policy engagement, and citizens’ participation, while Prof. Obukoadata focused on “Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Journalism, Media Practice and Civic Development”.

The University Don highlighted how AI tools were reshaping news production processes, enhancing investigative journalism, and expanding the frontiers of civic dialogue.

He, however, cautioned that while AI had come with enormous opportunities, publishers must be mindful of ethical risks, misinformation, and biases embedded in AI systems.

Members proposed collaborative strategies, including capacity-building workshops, AI-powered fact-checking tools, and frameworks for verifying digital content.

The induction ceremony ended with renewed commitment from both old and new members to uphold the values of responsible journalism and ensure that DOPF continued to serve as a model for credible online publishing in the state and beyond.

Speaking on behalf of the 12  new members inducted into the Forum, the publisher of Eagle News Online and one-time Chairman of the NUJ, Delta State Council, Mr. Osita Biose, who spoke on behalf of the other inductees, expressed gratitude to the Forum for having them join the body and pledged that they would contribute positively to strengthening the organization.

“For accommodating us, we will do the needful. We will promote DOPF across Delta State and uphold the standards expected of us”, he said.

The event brought together online publishers, media scholars, and communication experts from across Delta State.

Highlight of the event was the administration of the oath of commitment  to the new members by the Secretary of the Forum, Mr. Shedrack Onitsha.

Breakout sessions followed the lectures, allowing participants to discuss practical ways Artificial Intelligence could be deployed to improve communication, governance, and development in Delta State and Nigeria at large.members

Delta State Govt Charges 150 Teachers to Deploy Anti‑Trafficking Curriculum Skills

The Delta State Government has urged 150 subject teachers from 50 selected schools to impact their students positively through the effective application of the skills acquired during the ongoing TIP Content training and capacity building under the Schools Anti‑Trafficking Education and Advocacy Project (STEAP).

The Honourable Attorney General and Chairman of the Delta State Taskforce on Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, gave the charge on Wednesday at the closing ceremony of the first‑batch training held at Bon Hotel, Asaba, saying that the State Government is equipping secondary schools across the state to take an active role in preventing human trafficking through the STEAP project.

Represented by Taskforce member and Director General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Barrister Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, the Honourable Attorney General stated that the Taskforce comprising the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), You Matter Foundation, traditional rulers, faith-based organisations, and other stakeholders is working tirelessly to eliminate traffickers and their partners from the state.

Ohwovoriole explained that the STEAP training aligns with government goals to ensure teachers are well‑grounded in implementing STEAP through strategic training and sustainable capacity building Programmes. He emphasized that the program equips teachers with required methodologies, pedagogical tools, and other approaches to effectively deliver Trafficking in Persons (TIP) content embedded in the revised basic education curriculum.

He assured that efforts will intensify in the coming year to expand advocacy through regular engagements with traditional rulers, local government chairmen, faith-based organisations and stakeholders, driving the message to grassroots levels, while thanking NERDC, NAPTIP, ICMPD, and partners, especially the Kingdom of the Netherlands, for their resilience in enhancing teacher skills under STEAP, urging teachers to build friendly relationships with students to extract useful information for program success.

Earlier, Hajia Binta Adamu Bello, Director General of NAPTIP (represented by Mrs. Roku Odugbesan), stated that the workshop is part of broader efforts to safeguard children and strengthen national responses to human trafficking through education. She noted that over 55% of identified trafficking victims are school‑aged children, and NAPTIP and NERDC have collaborated to develop and integrate TIP content into curricula across basic and senior secondary schools nationwide.

The Project Manager of STEAP, Rhoda Dia‑Johnson, disclosed that over 75% of trafficking victims in West Africa are children, pointing out that empowering teachers as educators and child protection advocates creates safer school environments, builds resilient communities, and helps break the trafficking cycle.

She said the training focuses on equipping teachers to deliver TIP content using effective methodologies and tools aimed at preventing trafficking by educating children and communities, fostering safe environments, and supporting victims.

Members of the Delta State Taskforce present at the training programme included; Barr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, HAG Representative/ Director General of Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Barr. 2026 Appropriation Budget to Boost Delta Security Operations

The 2026 Appropriation Bill presented by the Delta Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori  has been revealed to significantly strengthen security across the state.

This was detailed in the budget, with major provisions aimed at improving operational efficiency, intelligence gathering, and community protection.

A key feature of the budget is the funding of the Delta State Security Trust Fund (DSSTF), which will support the procurement of modern equipment, vehicles, surveillance systems, and the establishment of a state-wide Command and Control Centre. The budget is projected to boost rapid response capabilities and enhance coordination among security agencies.

The budget also prioritizes expanding security presence in rural and riverine communities, a move analysts say could reduce kidnapping, armed robbery, oil theft, and other criminal activities by dismantling long-standing hideouts.

Beyond direct security investments, the budget’s emphasis on road infrastructure, youth empowerment, agricultural expansion, and social welfare programmes is expected to indirectly curb crime by creating jobs, improving mobility, and strengthening community trust in government.

The administration’s social protection initiatives, particularly support for widows, vulnerable groups, and low-income families, are also projected to reduce socioeconomic pressures that often contribute to crime.

Overall, security observers described the budget as a holistic approach that combines technology, community engagement, improved infrastructure, and economic empowerment to address insecurity across the state.
