Excitement as Oborevwori Commissions Model Technical College in Omadino

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has identified technical and vocational education as a powerful solution to youth unemployment, noting that beneficiaries would graduate as skilled professionals, entrepreneurs and job creators rather than dependents on white-collar employment.
The governor made this known on Monday while commissioning the newly completed Model Technical College in Omadino, Warri South Local Government Area, describing the institution as a flagship project and a major investment in technical and vocational education under his administration.
He stated that some accomplishments speak louder when seen than when explained, stressing that within two years, his government had executed landmark projects without borrowing funds or placing additional financial pressure on the people of Delta State.
According to him, the completion of the college clearly demonstrated prudent financial management, as contractors were paid promptly, ensuring the timely delivery of the project.
Governor Oborevwori revealed that academic activities had already commenced at the college prior to its official commissioning, a move he said underscored the institution’s preparedness and operational readiness.
He described the Omadino Model Technical College as another significant stride in strengthening technical and vocational education in the state, noting that the facility reflected purposeful leadership, careful planning and disciplined implementation.
Highlighting the quality of infrastructure, the governor pointed to the internal road network, administrative offices, classrooms, workshops and laboratories as evidence of his administration’s commitment to delivering standard educational facilities.
He commended former Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for initiating the project and noted that his administration ensured its completion in line with approved standards.
Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, Oborevwori said the college stood as a solid and impressive structure, worthy of pride for students, lecturers and staff, while giving glory to God for the successful completion.
The governor also applauded the quality of instruction at the institution, citing the confidence and eloquence displayed by a student speaker at the event as proof of effective teaching and learning.
He emphasized that modern educational infrastructure was vital to creating a conducive learning environment, improving academic performance, boosting teacher productivity and instilling pride within the school community.
“With the standard of facilities provided here, I am confident that students of this college can compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world. The workshops and laboratories are fully equipped with modern facilities,” he said.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to education under the MORE Agenda, Oborevwori assured residents that the state government would continue upgrading educational infrastructure to guarantee access to functional education and globally relevant skills.
However, he urged the school management, staff, students and host communities to safeguard and maintain the facilities, stressing that public assets belong to the people and must be protected from vandalism and neglect.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, described the Omadino Model Technical College as more than a modern technical institution, calling it a clear statement of purpose and a symbol of transformation.
He disclosed that the school is equipped with 12 classrooms and nine fully functional workshops designed to promote effective learning and skills acquisition. Residential and welfare facilities include two hostels, staff quarters, a principal’s residence and a corps members’ lodge, all aimed at ensuring comfort for students and staff.
Additional facilities include a dining hall, clinic and a large multipurpose hall, as well as recreational amenities such as a football field and basketball court. Supporting infrastructure like a generator house and operational quarters further enhance the institution’s readiness for academic and administrative activities.
Ufoh revealed that academic sessions began in September 2025 with the admission of Junior Technical One students, explaining that the decision was taken to prevent the sophisticated facilities from remaining idle. He added that the response from the Omadino community and neighbouring areas had been overwhelming.
Also speaking, the Olu of Warri, His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, thanked Governor Oborevwori for his attention to the development of riverine communities and called for sustained investment in schools, roads, bridges and jetties in riverine areas.
On behalf of the students, Miss Courtney Omotoyine described the commissioning as the realization of a long-awaited dream and a significant step toward securing the future of youths in Delta State and Nigeria. She urged students to make responsible use of the facilities and strive for excellence.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbegbaku; Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Democracy Must Be Guarded Against Civilian Dictatorship, Warns Oghene-aga Andrew Orugbo

The Board Chairman Otefe Polytechnic Oghara, Hon. Chief Barr. Oghene-aga Andrew Orugbo has offered a striking perspective on the nature of democracy, warning against the dangers of civilian dictatorship disguised as popular rule.

The distinguished lawyer, politician and community leader made this known during a candid conversation with Pressmen in Asaba,

“Democracy remains the best form of violence,” Orugbo said, emphasizing that the system’s strength lies in the power it gives to the people.

He said democracy ensures that power resides in the people, and that gives the people the right to choose their representatives. That is democracy.”

He cautioned against practices that undermine the core principles of democratic governance. “Democracy is not imposition or dictatorship. It is dictatorship in the name of consensus in anything that will deprive the people the right to choose,” Orugbo stressed.

Calling for vigilance, he advised citizens to be “very careful in democracy” to prevent its collapse, noting the shared consequences of failure.

“Even if democracy fails, all of us will suffer the consequences. We should not allow democracy to fail,” he said.

Delta Pension Bureau Records Major Breakthrough as N10bn Clears Backlog, Boosts Retirees’ Relief

The Delta State Bureau for State Pensions has recorded a major milestone in pension administration following the release of a N10 billion windfall by the state government to clear outstanding pension liabilities.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of the Bureau, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, the Secretary of the Bureau, Mr. Lawson Efenudu, described the development as a historic intervention that has significantly eased the burden on retirees across the state.
According to Efenudu, the assumption of office by the current chairman coincided with what he described as “divine grace,” as the Bureau, for the first time, received a N10 billion allocation specifically targeted at pension arrears.
“In his time as chairman, we are having a windfall of N10 billion to clear pension backlog. His Excellency, the Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori released that amount for us to defray pension debts. This is a milestone that has given us about 60 to 70 per cent relief from the pressure of retirees,” he said.
He explained that the core mandate of the Bureau is to ensure the judicious appropriation of pension funds strictly for the benefit of retirees, in line with existing laws and regulations.
Efenudu noted that pension administration operates under a tripartite arrangement involving government, Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs), and Pension Fund Custodians, all under the strict supervision of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
“The law says seven days after payment of salaries, all contributions and deductions must be remitted to the pension fund administrators. But sometimes, the speed you want to achieve is affected by the bureaucracy of stakeholders and the regulations we must comply with,” he explained.
He emphasized that personal discretion plays a minimal role in the Bureau’s operations, as all actions must align with PenCom guidelines.
On reforms introduced under the current leadership, Efenudu said the Bureau has become more proactive in communication and stakeholder engagement.
“The chairman is a good writer. We are now churning out circulars to educate retirees and workers, and even to guide pension fund administrators on how to relate with us. We have not been outreaching like this before now,” he said.
He added that the Bureau has also improved its interface with retirees, citing better organization during verification exercises, faster service delivery, and easier issuance of pension certificates as part of ongoing reforms.
Addressing transparency and accountability, Efenudu disclosed that the Bureau operates a merit-based payment policy, with about 70 per cent of payments determined strictly on merit. He also highlighted the role of a robust ICT system that interfaces directly with the government payroll.
“We don’t manage cash here. What we see are NEFTs and online transactions. Everything is traceable, fast, and accountable. From 2007 till date, records of contributors are in our archive because the system is ICT-driven,” he said.
On the consistency of pension payments, Efenudu stated that payments had been largely regular, noting that recent delays were caused by the introduction of a new Pension Remittance System by PenCom.
He explained that the new platform requires additional data validation and approval processes before funds are released to PFAs, resulting in temporary delays beyond the Bureau’s control.
Providing details on beneficiaries, Efenudu revealed that the first batch of payments covered 542 retirees under accrued rights and 309 under harmonization, with the second batch nearing completion.

He disclosed that the delay in releasing the second batch is due to necessary deductions, including recovery of salary overpayments, outstanding loans, car and housing loans, as well as probate fees in cases involving deceased civil servants.
“When you release bulk money like this, you must be careful. If you rush, government may lose funds it cannot recover,” he said, adding that the second batch is expected to be concluded by mid-February.
In his message to pensioners still awaiting their entitlements, Efenudu urged them to ensure their contact details remain updated with their PFAs and advised workers nearing retirement not to frequently change pension administrators without proper guidance.
“Relate with your PFA the same way you relate with your bank. Once the Bureau pays, our role is almost completed. Your continuous engagement with your PFA is key to accessing your benefits seamlessly,” he advised.
He reassured retirees of the Bureau’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and timely payment of pensions, stressing that the current reforms are aimed at building a more efficient and retiree-friendly pension system in Delta State.
