Delta Assembly’s Committee On Information Meets, Strategises On Way Forward For State Owned Media Houses

By Patrick Ochei

The House Committee on Information under the leadership of the Majority Leader of Delta State House of Assembly and member representing Aniocha North Constituency, Hon. Engr. Emeka Nwaobi has met at the Assembly Complex and resolved to take the State Owned Media outfits – Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS Warri), Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS Asaba) and The Pointer Newspapers to an enviable height.

This way forward resolution was reached in a meeting which held on Wednesday 22nd May, 2024 with Hon. Nwaobi presiding while the chairmen of Boards and their GMs made presentations with regard to their operational activities.

The Chairman of House Committee on Information, Hon. Nwaobi insisted that conscious effort must be made by the broadcast stations and the newspaper outfit to become more productive, shore up their revenue base and promote the image and reputation of government of the day, irrespective of their teething challenges.

He however, assured that the Legislature would assist them in solving their problems which majorly border on high cost of power, obsolete working equipment and capital intensive production.

Nwaobi nonetheless, singled out the Board Chairman of The Pointer Newspapers, Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu and profoundly commended him for his passionate effort to change the narrative in the Pointer Newspapers with a view to making it more productive.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza said the government had evaluated the challenges faced by the DBS Warri, DBS Asaba and of course, The Pointer and had come up with workable solutions to tackle them.

He said efforts are in top gear to move two transmitters from Ubulu-Uku substation to Warri and Asaba, to increase their production capacity while also looking forward to achieving modern and permanent solutions to the challenges.

Osuoza also commended Dr. Okorodudu for the creativity and credibility he has brought into the leadership of the Board of the Pointer Newspapers with a view to correcting some of the anomalies bedevilling it, thereby revealing that he was at a loss why the Ministry of Information could monthly spend over #11 million to produce the Pointer Newspapers without any result to show for it.

Earlier at the meeting, the Board Chairman of DBS Warri, Chief Moses Odibo, the GM of DBS Warri, Pastor Macolm Oteri, the GM of DBS Asaba, Mrs. Christine Emetulu and Chairman of the Board of The Pointer Newspapers, Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu had made presentations detailing the challenges of their media outfits.

They had asked members of the House Committee on Information to assist them to revamp their organisations and get funding to run them; positing that they were frustrated.

Meanwhile, members of the Committee on Information which included Hon. Umukoro Perkins Awolowo of Sapele Constituency, Hon. Oloye Pereotu of Burutu 11 Constituency, Hon. Chief Benson Obire of Warri South 11 Constituency and Hon. Prince Emeka Osamuta of Ndokwa East Constituency had had the opportunity of asking questions with regards to the performance of the media houses, the state of their revenue base and their vision of revamping to achieve more results.

In a nutshell, the Ministry of Information and the Media Parastatals under it were asked to go and put machinery in place for better performances of the media agencies while also ordering them to begin to draw up monthly production chats that capture their income and expenditure.

Oborevwori Upscales D-CARES: Beneficiaries To 110,841

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has scaled up the direct beneficiaries of Delta COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) Programme from from 36,353 to 110,841.

This depicts an increase of approximately 205 per cent on the initial figure of 36,353 beneficiaries.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this at a townhall meeting with beneficiaries of the (D-CARES) Programme held at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, on Wednesday.

He said he was happy to hear of the heartwarming and success stories of the beneficiaries and the positive impact of the activities of the D-CARES programme on their lives.

He said: “Upon assumption of office as Governor, and in line with the MORE Agenda, we commenced the implementation of a blueprint that will provide more access to opportunities by Deltans, irrespective of their socio-economic status.

“Consequently, I approved the release of funds to support the activities of the D-CARES programme across the various delivery platforms. I am, therefore, very pleased to see this large number of happy Deltans whose lives and businesses have been positively impacted.

“Scaling up the number of direct beneficiaries from 36,353 to 110,841, an increase of approximately 205%, in just about ten months, is, indeed, a commendable achievement.

“I, therefore, salute the entire D-CARES team for putting the people first in their assignments. However, as you know, ‘’ the reward for hard work is more work‘’ and as such, I enjoin the D-CARES team not to rest on theirs oars.

“The current economic situation in our country has made it imperative for us to be supportive of one another. I charge you, therefore, to enlist more Deltans and businesses so that more of our people can enjoy economic stability.

“To our dear beneficiaries, I congratulate you all. It is my hope and prayer that you will seize this opportunity provided by the programme to chart a new path that will lead to economic freedom for yourselves and your families.”

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Economic Planning/Chairman, State CARES Steering Committee, Hon. Sonny Ekedayen, said the state government, through D-CARES programme, had provided support to 36,353 direct beneficiaries at the inception of the present administration in the state.

Hon. Ekedayen noted that the figure had, in the last 10 months, increased exponentially by 74,488 to a total of 110,841 persons, representing an increase of approximately 205 per cent.

He pointed out that the result was a true testament to the commitment of Governor Oborevwori towards improving the lives and economic fortunes of the poor and vulnerable persons in Delta State as aptly represented by the letter ‘O’ which means opportunity for all in his MORE Agenda for Deltans.

According to him, the D-CARES programme was designed to focus on three key result areas which he listed as increasing social transfers, basic services and livelihood support to poor and vulnerable households; increasing food security and safe functioning of food supply chains to poor households and facilitating recovery and enhancing capacities of micro and small- scale entrepreneurs.

Earlier, the Secretary, State CARES Steering Committee/State Coordinator, Delta CARES Programme, Lady (Dr.) Patience Ogbewe, said the D-CARES programme was a vital intervention dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable individuals and community members.

Lady Ogbewe noted that COVID-19 had come and gone, adding, however, that the challenges it posed were still being felt, coupled with other prevailing economic upheavals such as inflation, unemployment and environmental shocks, among others.

The Coordinator said the Committee embarked on a journey of hope, empowerment and transformation in the process of implementing the D-CARES programme, adding that the state government had endeavoured to address the complete needs of the vulnerable population which she listed to include economic opportunities, access to healthcare, education, water and sanitation and food security.

While saying that the D-CARES town hall meeting was quite apt, she expressed profound appreciation to the governor for his unwavering support for the success of the programme in the state.

Okowa Is Not In The Way Of Ned Over 2027

By Norbert Chiazor

A lot has been said, written or speculated about the political future of Senator Ned Nwoko as lead-up to 2027.

The crux of the matter by public conjecture is that Senator Dr.Ifeanyi Okowa, immediate past governor of Delta is mounting ubiquitous structure in Delta North to upstage Prince Ned Nwoko and launch a comeback to the Senate in 2027.

In a democracy especially in the Nigerian clime, where rumour mill is the biggest industry,we can always expect all manners of hullabaloo.

But take heed for free:

Nwoko and Okowa are together,talking- united in a chummy liaison.Enigmatic Okowa met charismatic Ned and gave his Anioma brother KUDOS for his vibrant and colourful performance at the Senate so far.

The former governor has a mindset unknown to the cameras and social media. He left government house poised to grow a formidable generation of political leaders in Anioma and Delta, akin to the Tinubu Lagos example.Senator Ned Nwoko is among the rising Anioma, nay Delta stars,Okowa wants to shine. To all-time eminence.

A true leader makes leaders.

OKOWA IS WITH NED.

Moreover,Senator Ned Nwoko,is enamoured now with his Senate mandate given by the people. He is in competition only with himself. To dignify Anioma and humanity.

Ned will keep standing as Delta’s strongest voice in the 10th Senate.

When tomorrow comes, Ned and Okowa will cross the river in the same boat. Ekwueme will not contest against Ned or stop him. He will back Ned. Power belongs to the Supreme. Okowa and Ned are wise. They are working and walking through thick and thin.

Why Ned Nwoko Keeps Standing Tall In The Senate

By Patrick Ochei

Check history and it will give you answer to everything you inquire. The antecedents of Senator Prince Ned Nwoko is so loud that on getting back into the National Assembly after so many years, he was easily fished out by his aggressive activism to social reforms and national development. That’s why they say that a gold fish has no hiding place.

In less than one year in office, Senator Prince Ned Nwoko has impeccably brought visibility into Legislative business. He not only brought renaissance, he has got the penchant of teaching others how to do the job.

He came prepared and not like those who found their way into the institution of the Legislature, and even after several terms of office, still couldn’t grapple their essence of being there.

As a House of Representatives member between 1999 and 2003, Nigeria, Delta State and Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency are still benefitting from his legacy achievements till date. The one constituency project that was not accomplished at the time under review – the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, he has returned to the trenches, revisiting it after 25 years and digging it up for completion. And to his sagacity and formidable drive, that result and so many others are as good as achieved. The list is becoming endless, from the Okpai Gas Plant 980 megawatts electricity project, to several other Constituency projects of benefit to the Senatorial Zone and others that are inclined towards national development.

Prince Ned Nwoko was born royal. He saw bravery early in life. He pursued academics to the best of schools even outside the shores of Nigeria to give vent to his dreams and agenda in life. He understands our history – the history of Nigeria and the history of our colonial masters. This was possible by his study of History, and then Law which encompasses his human dynamism.

His impetus in Commercial Law helped his years of struggle to get the International Community to succumb to his legal radicality that brought about the Paris Club Refund.

As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria today, his being there is not a child’s play. It must not be mixed with vendetta politics. He is roundly fit to represent us now and later, until he achieves his agenda, which is ultimately in the best interest of Nigeria, Delta State and Delta North Senatorial District.

Just follow his activities as represented by the functional tripod of the Legislature – Lawmaking, Oversight and Representation. He knows the functions well as the tip of his fingers, he has them rightly understood, and he has done well already by his actions as regards the functionality of his office. He is a juggernaut who appears more like a teacher to his own colleagues.

Truly, Senator Prince Ned Nwoko is a fine thoroughbred Legislator, and he has continued to stand very tall in the Senate of Nigeria.

Pilgrimage Now A Journey Of Spiritual Development, Rejuvenation Says NCPC Boss

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, has declared that Christian pilgrimage is now a journey of spiritual development and rejuvenation.

He made this statement during his first official visit to the NCPC North Central zonal office in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Wednesday, May 15,, 2024.

According to Bishop Adegbite, under his leadership, the spiritual content of Christian pilgrimage will be enhanced and rejuvenated, alongside the developmental content of pilgrimage. He emphasized that the era when pilgrimage was considered a jamboree is over.

The NCPC boss commended the efforts of the zonal staff for their commitment and hard work, stating, “If we do not have you here, we cannot be everywhere.” He promised to strengthen the zone for effective service delivery and assured them of better days ahead. He also promised to ensure that the zones would be allowed to effectively handle the activities under their zones without any encumbrances.

Bishop Adegbite urged the staff of the North Central zonal office to continue putting in their best, stating that he would look into the issue of their office accommodation with a view to providing a better alternative. He also enjoined them to key into the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed TInubu, stressing that the President means well for the country.

The Commission has declared this year as “our year of Renewed Hope and Satisfaction,” in tandem with the new Corporate Slogan of the Commission, “NCPC… Service and Satisfaction.”

Earlier, the Zonal Coordinator, North Central zonal office, Mr. Aso Simon, welcomed the Executive Secretary to the zone.

He affirmed that the visit would uplift them spiritually and morally. He urged the Executive Secretary to ensure that the zones are carried along in the scheme of things, such as screening of intending pilgrims and participation in airport supervision within the zone.

NCC Faces Senator Ned Nwoko’s Call For Social Media Giants To Establish Local Offices In Nigeria

Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing the Delta North senatorial district, has questioned the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) about their stance on the compulsory establishment of offices by major social media platforms like Facebook, X, YouTube, Instagram, etc., in Nigeria for economic advancement and efficient dispute resolution.

The lawmaker raised this concern on Thursday May 16, 2024  during the screening of two nominees for executive commissioners of the NCC by the Senate Committee on Communications.

Directing his questions to the two nominees, Sunday Abraham Oshadami and Rimini Haraya Makama, Senator Nwoko emphasized the importance of mandatory local offices for these social media giants. He stated:

“In France, Germany, or elsewhere, they are all mandated to have offices there. You cannot be operating in a country where you don’t have any accountability. If Facebook has an office in Nigeria, it will create jobs for Nigerians. The company will have the responsibility of paying taxes for whatever business they generate. Additionally, they will be easily reachable in the event of litigation”, he said .

“Resolving legal or regulatory issues pertaining to content, data privacy, or user rights is challenging due to the lack of a local presence. You have to engage a lawyer abroad to be able to reach them, which is very costly, thereby impacting the protection of users’ rights.

“Lastly, if they’re operating here in Nigeria, there will be a transfer of technology. They will train and give opportunities to our young ones”.

“Healthcare is not just about diagnosis and treatment of illnesses; it is also about promoting wellness and preventing diseases through effective advocacy to ensure the well-being of every citizen.
