Zik Gbemre: Sorry, Sheriff Is Your Governor
BY Norbert Chiazor
“Some broken hearts never mend, Some memories never end, Some tears will never dry.” Country crooner, Don Williams 1977 hit song surged in the psyche, as one read Zik Gbemre’s malicious piece on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Okuama incident.
Who is Zik Gbemre? No relation with the great Zik – Nnamdi Azikiwe, please!
Zik Gbemre is a man with an incurable spleen on Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Rt.Hon. Sheriff Oberevwori and, in fact, anyone successful.
Gbemre, red-faced and notorious for corrosive tantrums, had been making reckless pronouncements against predecessor and successor, peaking his uncivil lamentations in the wake of Oborevwori’s ascendancy as Governor.
His bitter bile brews from an excruciating pain – his paymaster and benefactor lost the 2023 Delta governorship elections.
Worst still, since the 1990s, he had always supported losers in Delta political debacle. A stark reminder of the sad character, in Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” Santiago – an ageing fisherman who spent 44 days in the Gulf Stream, trying to catch a giant Marlin but ended in frustration with the carcass.
Gbemre told the world that Sheriff would lose the “March 18, 2023 polls.” He went home like Santiago!
Today, Sheriff is his Governor. Chukwu is Oghene, not man.
Gbemre clouds his uncouth acidic social commentaries, especially on Delta ruling authorities with a deceptive mantra “We Mobilize Others To Fight For Individual Causes As If Those Were Our Causes”.
But even the least perceptive observer would easily detect that it is all guile, forged altruism. Nothing but sour grapes.
Overwhelmed by an endemic loss of self perpetuation and extended grief, he finds it difficult to expel disorder from his being. This explains the biting malignance of his disillusionment and virulence of his criticism.
Otherwise, how would any person of goodwill fault Governor Oborevwori for the inauguration of a Management Committee for the resettlement of Okuama indigenes, because “the camp is yet to take off” according to Gbemre. A most vicious, jaundiced viewpoint he concocted, even when it is in the public domain, that the Governor had promptly released take-off funds for the exercise.
Baying in his characteristic bad blood, Gbemre further raged that the governor inaugurated the “Ogbodo-led Committee at Asaba “instead of “Ewu”, betraying the meanest of pettiness, laced with his pathological tribal bigotry.
Stomach-wrenching malevolence is a hard dilemma to subdue, but no one expected a man gloating over the Okuama tragedy to be this insensitive.
His penchant to unjustly call out Oborevwori, at any opportunity is bizarre.
Writing on the reported movement of some courses of the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro to Orerokpe, Gbemre fired an absurd proposition: “Sheriff should have moved the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Law to Abraka since a University has been established in Ozoro”
“Burnout” Elders was what he once labeled Delta State Advisory Council, a respected body of eminent Deltans set up by government, charged with maintaining peace and oneness among people of the multi-State. Among the members are personages like Professor Sam Oyovbaire, Alaowei Broderick Bozimo, Chief Chris Agbobu, Dr. Roland Oritsejafor, Dr Esther Uduehi, Chief Iduh Amadhe and so on.
What has been the contributions of Gbemre to Delta, nay Okuama? Grudge, war-mongering, ethnic hatred, incitement, and divisiveness.
Given his loathing for the fortunes of constituted authorities, no one is persuaded by his sanctimonious propaganda, mouthed in obscenities. Everybody in Delta is a “nonentity”, only Gbemre is noble! How nice is narcissism?
With Oborevwori working hard to transform Warri with Julius Berger mega bridges and roads, execution of vital projects across Delta, N40 billion pensions for Local Government retirees, recruitment of about 2,000 LG personnel, payment of N5 billion promotion arrears to civil servants among sundry initiatives, the Governor is too busy to notice Gbemre’s blah blah blah.
Let him keep fishing!
Prioritize Welfare, Security of Corp Members, Delta State NYSC Cordinator Tells Employers
… Seeks Government Intervention
The Delta State Cordinator of National Youth Service Corps, (NYSC), Mr Olusegun Alao has reiterated his anticipation of the state governor’s promise to the Corps.
Mr Alao made this known during the terminal parade and formal closing ceremony of the 2024 Batch ‘A’ stream II orientation course for corps members deployed to the state at NYSC permanent orientation camp, in Issele- Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area.
He said the intervention of the state governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to the challenges they were faced with in the camp would go a long way to give succor to the Corps.
Expressing gratitude for the governor’s your unwavering support to the NYSC, he highlighted some of the activities of the corps members while in camp, the state coordinator said they were exposed to lectures on contemporary issues such as security, drug and substance abuse, value reorientation, the state’s culture and traditions, skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme.
He added that the inter-platoon sports competition fostered team spirit among the Corps Members, while evenings were filled with inter-platoon drama, cultural dances, and beauty pageant competitions for relaxation and entertainment.
Alao said the Corps Members had demonstrated a high level of discipline, dedication, commitment and readiness to serve diligently in various communities across the state for their primary assignment.
He urged employers of the corps members to prioritize the welfare and security of those ones assigned to them.
Speaking the Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori who was represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari said the state Government was committed to its responsibilities to the NYSC and corps members and will continue to do everything within their limited resources to fulfill these obligations.
He charged the corps members to absorb the lessons of the orientation course, which was put together to instill in them the cultural values and ideals of the National Youth Service Corps.
Oborevwori while assuring them of safety enjoined them to respect the cultural norms and traditions of the communities where they find themselves, adding that they should strive to show understanding and adaptability as part of their national service.
He urged the corps members to internalize every lesson learnt during the orientation exercise, as it would guide them throughout their service and thereafter.
The Governor admonished them to avoid quick gains that could tarnish their reputation, endanger their lives and live up to expectations and become worthy ambassadors of the NYSC, your families and the nation.
Zik Gbemre’s Infantile Attack On Oborevwori, A Misplaced Rage
The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Delta State has been drawn to the rant of one Zik Gbemre wherein he singled out His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State as the object of his butt.
The party in a statement signed by the State Secretary, Engr. Dan Ossai said: “It would not have dignified the unnecessary attack with a response but for the fact that it made reference to the party, which fielded and worked hard during the campaigns leading to Deltans giving their overwhelming votes to the PDP candidate who today is the Governor.
“For us in the PDP, we liken Zik Gbemre’s diatribe to the rage of the heathen which the Holy Bible describes clearly in Psalm 2, asking derisively, why are people plotting a vain thing, setting themselves and political kingpins taking counsel together against the LORD and His Anointed.”
Delta PDP notes the untoward nature of the write up titled: “OKUAMA IDP’s (sic) CAMP: ANOTHER SHAME OF A VILLAGE CHAMPION GOVERNOR,” and in particular, the ill-mannered, ill-bred, discourteous and impolite language used on the person of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by Zik Gbemre, who, once again exposed his garullous penchant as an irreverent fellow that lacks the rules of acceptable behaviour.
While we refuse to waste time time by dignifying him and his sponsors with a rejoinder knowing that it is obvious from his mindset that he failed to give proper consideration to the possible consequences of what he wrote on, it is important nevertheless, to clear a few incongruences in his ill-tempered offering.
First, he is not in government and so is not capable of appreciating the intricacies involved in the Okuama matter. But we know that President Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, who Governor Sheriff Oborevwori visited to intimate him about the Okuama situation, knows and understands.
Therefore, we do not think that a dyed-in-wool disgruntled fellow and his shallow minded analysis deserves any rejoinder and we commend the administration of Governor Oborevwori for remaining focused with the committed underground moves being made to restore normalcy to the Okuama community and not pandering to the distractions being weaved by devious elements who constitute themselves as sworn enemies of the Governor.
Indeed the moves yielded very superlative dividends with the recent announcement by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori himself, that the Nigerian Army has finally agreed to withdraw from Okuama.
Below is an excerpt of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s announcement for the information and education of Zik Gbemre:
“My Dear Good People of Delta State, I have the pleasure to announce to you that, upon many deliberations and collaborations between the State Government and the Military Leadership, the Nigerian Army has agreed to withdraw its Officers and Men from Okuama.
“I spoke with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja on Monday, 6th of May, and as at today, 8th of May, 2024, the Military have withdrawn from Okuama.
“With this development, the people of Okuama can now safely return to their homes and begin the process of reintegration and rebuilding their homes.
“I want to express my deep and profound gratitude to Mr. President, the Chief of Army Staff, and the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army for their understanding and cooperation.
“In my engagements with them, they demonstrated the highest level of concern and care for the plight of the displaced persons. To God be the glory that we have achieved an amicable resolution,” Governor Oborevwori disclosed.
We will of course not be drawn into engaging the silly and spurious innuendos over the academic status and qualifications of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, which made the rounds prior to the general election and upon which the likes of Zik Gbemre continue to lean on as a wobbly crutch to balm their thoroughly bashed post-election egos.
Suffice it however, to repeat for emphasis, especially for those who may have been taken in by the acrimonious posturing and malicious invective, that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori holds a Masters’ Degree in Political Science from a renowned Nigerian university and has attended many courses in highly rated Ivory Towers Overseas.
Besides, not only are members of his cabinet brilliant and well read fellows in their respective areas of study, the cabinet is a blend of the young and old, with gender sensitivity.
So far, they are doing well and we in PDP and other right thinking Deltans have refused to be swayed by viscious gossips and improper use of the social media to attack with a view to bringing down our beloved Governor.
We will thus restrain from stooping so low and be petty as to challenge Zik Gbemre and his sponsors to display their own academic qualifications side by side those of members of the Oborevwori cabinet, for objective comparisons.
But we must in good conscience, point out that Gbemre and his cohorts, out of mischief, are feigning not to observe the great work that is going on by Julius Berger in Warri, courtesy of the N78 billion contract awarded by the Oborevwori Administration, to give the oil city and environs a face lift.
They are also blind to the many projects that the Governor is doing, especially in the unwavering determination to complete on-going projects inherited by his administration, thus putting paid to the syndrome of uncompleted and abandoned projects.
So far the health institutions of the State are working, the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions are all in top forms; 2,000 school teachers were employed across the State; civil servants are paid as at when due, with pensioners enjoying their pensions. In addition, the roads construction work going on across the State has turned Delta into a huge construction site.
But Zik Gbemre, beclouded by mischief has bluntly and deliberately refused to take cognisant of all these and many more.
The Governor did not just emerge; he contested the primary election against his opponents and defeated them in a free, fair, credible and transparent election conducted openly, to become the PDP candidate.
We are glad to have sponsored him to fly the PDP party flag in Delta State gubernatorial election. He went ahead to win the statewide governorship polls and went through 38 intense court cases, which culminated in his resounding victory at the Supreme Court.
We will let Deltans judge how Zik Gbemre described fellow Deltans, decent compatriots for that matter as “dried woods”. For Zik Gbemre, being in government should be the exclusive preserve of people like him and his sponsors. Talk of unbridled display of arrogance.
Yet, Deltans know better that “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from above (John 3:27). Most of the things that count with us as human beings don’t count with God.
This is why Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori fits the bill from God’s own perspective and God honoured him with the Governorship of Delta State.
Thank you Deltans for ignoring this infantile attack and for keeping faith with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and PDP in Delta State.
Oborevwori Visits Okuama, Says Residents ‘ll Return Soon
Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has visited Okuama with an assurance for the safe return of the indigenes who fled the community in the wake of the crisis over the killing of 17 officers and soldiers on March 14.
The Governor, who was accompanied by Commander 63 Brigade, Brig. Gen. Unachukwu Ugochukwu, and top government officials, on a journey that took over one hour and twenty minutes from Warri, reiterated that innocent citizens would not be made to suffer for what they know nothing about.
Recall that the killings made the people of the community to flee for fear of being attacked.
Speaking to journalists at Okuama, Governor Oborevwori said: “We have followed due process in the whole incident. The people have been buried and the King that was detained has been released yesterday and today I am here to see what happened in Okuama community.
“The Okuama 17 is something that we didn’t expect to happen because it is against our bargain for peace and security which I promised Deltans that we are going to enhance.
“We have been enjoying peace and security since last year until the 14th of March when the four Army officers and 13 soldiers were murdered.
“They were not just murdered, their bodies were mutilated and we have come here to see what happened.
“Let me again reiterate Mr President’s promise that no innocent person would be victimised and you can see that, from that time till now, there has been no harassment of citizens of this community.
“I have come to see how the innocent people of this community can be reintegrated back with the cooperation of the military.
“We know its a big loss to them but we have to follow due process. The Brigade Commander is with us and the newly posted Commander of 181 Battalion, Lt Col Dabo, is also here with us and its a great synergy.”
He said his administration was doing a lot to effectively resolve the dispute, adding that citizens of Okuama would soon return home.
Continuing, Governor Oborevwori, said: “Let me once again thank Mr President and Commander in Chief, Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Defence Staff for their cooperation so far.
“They have been very supportive and they have kept to their promise that innocent people will not be victimised. I want to assure the people of Okuama there is no point running away from your community.
“We are going to bring you back to your community. It’s only those that are involved the military are looking for”.

The Executive Secretary Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, Bishop Stephen Adegbite has said that the Commission under his leadership would be transparent and fair to everyone who does business with NCPC.
He disclosed this on Thursday, 18th April, 2024 during the opening of financial bid for air carriers and ground handlers at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
In the words of the NCPC boss , ” we are going to be transparent and be fair to everyone; we expect the best”.

The NCPC boss who just returned from his working visit to Israel and Jordan expressed satisfaction with his engagement in the holy land. According to him, ” we had wonderful time in Jordan and excellent experience in Israel “.
He said there was peace in Israel and all their scheduled meetings were successfully held. He acknowledged that he travelled at the most challenging time when Iran struck Israel directly from Tehran for the first time, but God made it possible for the Israeli and Jordanian airspaces to reopen few hours after it was shut.
He explained that during his meeting in Amman, he charged the Jordanian government to ensure they improve and upgrade their holy sites, stating that the Commission would not accept anything less than satisfaction, especially now that the Commission has a new corporate direction which is hinged on ‘ Service and Satisfaction ‘.

About six service providers participated in the financial bid opening: one air carrier and five ground handlers following their successful selection in the expression of interest of the bid opening earlier conducted by the Commission few weeks ago.
