The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter Comrade Sonia Unobunjo has called on women and other stakeholders in society building to join hands to Invest in Women.
Comrade Unobunjo who stated that investing in women can be achieved in different ways to include physical, mental, emotional, psychological, and financial empowerment also emphasised on the importance of the International Women’s Day, stressed that, women journalists play a vital role in shaping public opinion and amplifying the voices of the marginalized.
She asserted that when women are empowered and provided with equal opportunities, they bring out the best in them. She said, ” Women empowerment, can be likened to be national empowerment as it translates to progress, innovation, and sustainable development.
Comrade Unobunjo pledges NAWOJ Delta’s commitment to continue to advocate for the rights of Women and girls, advocate for welfare, protection and empowerment for Women journalists in the state.
Through capacity building initiatives, and advocacy programmes, NAWOJ Delta will create a more inclusive and equitable media space where it translates to journalists without boundaries.
She identified women as one of the greatest obstacles to invest in women and charged them to walk side by side with one another, shun backbiting, envy and not to be a clog in the wheel of progress for a fellow woman’s endeavours to succeed.
Comrade Unobunjo who was speaking in Asaba during a symposium organised by the Delta State Ministry Affairs, Community and Social Development to commemorate the International Women’s Day 2024 with the theme “Invest in Her: Accelerating Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment, commended the Delta State Governor, Rt. Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori, his wife, Dcns Tobore Oborevwori for implementing projects and programmes that will advance women status in the state.
Like the ‘Oliver Twist’ she call for the inclusion of women journalists to be part of beneficiaries of the lofty programmes of the State Government.
