The National Assembly (NASS), has promised to address the demands of the Nigeria Labour Congress within one week.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who was represented by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume, made the promise when he received members of the NLC at the National Assembly Complex, in Abuja.
He assured the protesting workers that NASS was in support of their struggle and that they will find a permanent solution to their plight.
He urged them to be patient, while NASS steps in to address their demand, adding that a committee would be set up to review their request
Speaking on the motive behind the nationwide mass protest, the NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero said it was to expressed workers’ frustrations and grievances of the policies that had brought starvation on Nigerians, adding that there had been fruitless discussions on their demand hence the need for the protest.
Ajaero said that their demands include the immediate implementation of the resolutions jointly signed with organised Labour and government.
He also called for the release the eight months withheld salaries of the university lectures and workers, immediate reversal of all anti-poor policies of government including the recent hike in PMS price, school fees and VAT.
The National President, urged the Federal Government to fix the country’s’ local refineries in Port hacourt, Warri and Kaduna.
In the same vein the Trade Union Congress (TUC) President, Mr Festus Osifo, frowned at the insensitivity of government to the plight of the masses and urged NASS to cut down your budget.
Some of the placards carried by the protesters had the inscriptions; “Stop importation of Petrol”, “Revive the Refineries”, ”Increase in price of fuel responsible for inflation, poverty”, “We condemn increase in school fees” amongst others.
