Delta State governor and Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa has commended the major role played by teachers in nation building.
Governor Okowa who was represented by the Commissioner for Secondary Education Mrs Rose Ezewu, gave the commendation during the 2022 Teacher’s Day Celebration, with the theme ‘Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers’, at Cenotaph in Asaba, the state capital.
The Commissioner Secondary Education affirmed governor Okowa’s support to the educational sector, in ensuring more effective service delivery.
The Commissioner Basic Education, Hon Sunday Onoriode and his counterpart, Technical Education, Mrs Diabor felicitated with teachers in the state and encouraged them to put in their best in the discharge of their duties with a view to transforming the educational sector.
On his part, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT), Mr Titus Okotie called on the State governor, to accord teachers their pride of place in the social economic development of the state, and also recruit more teachers among other demands.
Mr Okotie noted that salaries were being delayed, as a result of the inclusion of minimum wage by the government to Teacher’s salaries.
In a lecture delivered by Mr Sunday Efago said the theme “Transformation of education begins with teachers” was apt as it had become necessary to ensure the prompt payment of Teacher’s salaries to enable them deliver on their professional mandates, as well as the payment of their pensions after retirement.

While speaking with Journalists, the state Secretary of the union, Mr Dan Basime acknowledged that teachers were the engine to the educational system, and re echo the need for them to be provided with opportunities, that would motivate them to embrace the challenges of the 21 century.
Highlight of the event was the match pass by the teachers in the 25 Local Government Areas of the state.
