FOUR members of a family lost their lives on Wednesday after an early morning fire swept through their home at Kundila Layin Baba Impossible in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued the same day.
He explained that the blaze was first reported around 4:13 a.m. by one of their officers, Abba Datti.
“Abba Datti, one of our staff members, notified us of the incident at about 4:13 a.m. today (Wednesday),” Abdullahi said.
On getting to the scene, firefighters discovered that the ground-floor structure, measuring roughly 40 by 30 feet and serving as a residence, had already been engulfed by flames.
He said the fire consumed two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a toilet.
According to the statement, five people were trapped inside the 43-year-old father, Shodandi; his wife, Rafi’a, 30; and their two daughters, three-year-old Mardiya and one-and-a-half-year-old Yusira all of whom died in the fire.
A 12-year-old boy, Aminu Shodandi, was however rescued alive by the firefighters.
The Fire Service extended its sympathy to the affected family and advised residents to be extra careful with fire sources, especially during the harmattan period.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire started from a mosquito coil the family had lit before sleeping.
