…Directs Arrest and Prosecution of Firearms Offenders

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has instructed security agencies to decisively arrest and prosecute anyone found carrying firearms or attempting to undermine peace in the state as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
The governor issued the directive on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the new Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, and his management team at the Government House in Asaba.
Describing CP Adesola’s posting to Delta as a homecoming, Oborevwori noted that the police boss was familiar with the state, having previously served in several strategic operational roles. He attributed the prevailing peace across Delta to strong synergy among security agencies and praised the Commissioner’s professionalism, experience, and deep knowledge of the terrain.
Expressing confidence in the new CP, the governor said Delta had remained peaceful since Adesola assumed office, adding that the state was proud of the early gains recorded under his leadership.
Reflecting on past security challenges, Oborevwori recalled that before 2023, the open display of firearms by criminals and youths was common, but stressed that such practices had been firmly brought to an end and would not resurface.
He applauded senior officers of the command for their commitment, specifically commending ACP Aliyu Shaba and the former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations for their roles in curbing gun-related violence in formerly troubled areas.
With another election season approaching, the governor urged the police to remain vigilant and resolute, warning that the government would not condone insecurity in any form. He maintained that anyone caught with illegal firearms or involved in acts capable of breaching public peace must face the law.
Oborevwori also called on residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing credible information, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility. He added that peace is essential for development and investment, stressing that Delta State remains open and safe for business.
In his response, CP Aina Adesola thanked the governor for the warm welcome and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state. He assured residents that the police would continue to work round the clock to guarantee safety and stability in Delta State.
