Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) decision to adopt a consensus approach in electing party officials remains the most effective strategy for promoting unity and strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Diri made the remark during the APC South-South Zonal Congress held in Asaba, where he expressed satisfaction that the region is now politically aligned under one platform. He emphasized the importance of the South-South having a strong voice in national decision-making.

As chairman of the South-South Governors Forum, Diri recalled that the delegate-based system used during the 2019 governorship primaries often led to tension and disputes. According to him, the political atmosphere has now shifted toward consensus-building, which fosters harmony within the party.

He noted that unity remains critical for the region, warning that internal divisions could weaken its influence at the national level. Diri urged party members to remain focused and committed to safeguarding the APC’s interests in the South-South, expressing confidence that the party would emerge victorious in the 2027 elections.

The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his achievements so far, noting that party congresses, once characterized by conflict, have now become more peaceful through the adoption of consensus arrangements.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised former National Vice Chairman, Chief Victor Giadom, for his efforts in uniting governors in the region under the APC. He expressed delight over Diri’s alignment with the party, describing him as a calm and admirable leader.

Akpabio further stated that the unity of South-South governors within the APC positions the region to deliver the highest number of votes for President Tinubu in 2027. He also highlighted the significance of the region producing a Senate President under the current administration.

In separate goodwill messages, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside governors from Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Edo, and Cross River, stressed the need for collective action to ensure the re-election of President Tinubu. They all pledged their support toward achieving that goal.

Chief Victor Giadom was re-elected as the party’s zonal chairman along with seven other executives. The motion for the dissolution of the outgoing zonal executive was moved by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, and seconded by his Bayelsa counterpart, Abraham Ingobere.
