In the continuous bid to safeguard Delta State’s youth against use of Illicit Drugs and Drug abuse, the Delta State Government through the State Orientation and Communications Bureau, under the leadership of the Director-General, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) led by the State Commander, Mr Wada Abubakar Esq, on Wednesday, brought the vital message of drug abuse and its consequences to the students of St. Martin College, Isho Mixed Secondary School and Ibusa Mixed Secondary School.
Mr Silas Omobhude Osagie, an Assistant State Commander, NDLEA, Delta State Command, had a robust interface with students in their large number, emphasizing the need to abstain from use of Illicit Drugs and Drug abuse.
He conveyed Governor Oborevwori’s message on the urgent need to have a “Drug Free Delta” in line with one of his realistic reforms on peace building and enhanced security, stating the importance of the sensitization campaign, and why they must be drug Free so as to fulfil their God given colourful destiny.
“His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, has sent us here today through one of the government agencies; the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, under Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe’s leadership with the message – ” Drug kills, Say No To Drugs, and Yes To Life”, in order to have a Drug Free Delta State.
The NDLEA Assistant State Commander, educated the students on how to identify certain drugs with live samples, emphasizing the destructive nature of the drugs, why they should avoid certain social parties.
“There was a birthday party very close to you were we found and rescued some young girls about your age who were victims of drugs mixed with the drinks and were about to be raped”.
“We are here to advise you never to keep bad company, stay away from Illicit Drugs and Drug Abuse so that you can achieve your individual colourful destiny.
“Your governor and our governor, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori loves you, and he sent us here to tell you that you should focus on your studies, be good students and to say Yes to Live, No Drugs.”
It was a robust engagement as students asked questions like “why some of these drugs are produced, why they are harmful to individuals and many more, which the NDLEA representative clarified, and sang and danced to “SAY NO TO HARD DRUGS, YES TO LIFE.
The staff and principals of the Schools were elated about this timely sensitization, expressing their gratitude to the State government, while also commending governor Oborevwori, for his love and concern for all Deltans.
The Schools management, Principals and Teachers pledged to reecho the message of having a “Drug Free Delta” and to strengthen the school’s newly established “War Against Drug Abuse” WADA Club, which stems to empower students to become advocates for a drug-free society.
Going forward, the “Drug Free Delta” campaign team will visit schools in kwale, Ozoro and Oleh on Thursday.
