A robbery attempt at a residence in Effurun, Delta State, took an unexpected turn when the victim confronted one of the two armed suspects, wrestled with him and forced the robbers to flee, abandoning their gun.
The incident occurred around 5:30am on September 4, 2026, at the Charlisco area along the NPA Express Road, Effurun.
The Delta State Police Command said the two masked men broke into the residence of a 48-year-old man while armed with a locally made shotgun.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe to, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to the police, the victim confronted one of the suspects carrying the firearm and engaged him in a struggle.
However, rather than surrendering, the victim allegedly engaged the gunman in a struggle and succeeded in overpowering him.
The confrontation reportedly caused the suspects to flee the scene, abandoning the firearm in their haste to escape.
The recovered weapon was subsequently secured and may assist security operatives in their investigation and efforts to identify the fleeing suspects.
The incident has reportedly generated concern among residents, with calls for increased security measures and patrols in parts of Effurun to prevent similar attacks
During the struggle, the gun broke, forcing the suspects to abandon it as they escaped from the residence.
“The second suspect struck the victim on the forehead before both suspects fled, abandoning the firearm,” the statement said.
The victim subsequently reported the incident at the Ekpan Police Division at about 6:14am.
Police operatives were deployed to the scene and recovered the damaged locally made firearm.
The victim was also taken to a hospital for treatment, while the command commenced a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, commended the victim for his courage and assured him that the suspects would be arrested.
He said, “The suspects will be tracked down and arrested.”
Meanwhile, the police have arrested a 40-year-old woman, Joy Anthony, over alleged drug peddling in Agbor, Delta State.
The suspect was arrested around 5am on September 6 by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Ubulu-Uku, following what the command described as credible intelligence.
The police said operatives carried out a covert operation in Agbor and arrested Anthony.
A search warrant was subsequently executed at her residence in Agbor-Obi, where the police said they recovered quantities of Swinol, Tramadol, Codeine, Canadian Loud and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies.
