Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
The celebrated actor’s death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his family through his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on social media.
His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, was also part of the family announcement.
In the statement, the family described the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo”, while announcing that he died on September 16, 2026.
The statement read in part: “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle.”
The family identified him as Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR) and gave his lifespan as July 11, 1942 – September 16, 2026.
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect its privacy as it mourns the veteran actor.
Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most recognisable theatre, television and film actors.
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built a distinguished career spanning Nigerian theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and appeared in several British television productions and international films before becoming one of the most recognisable faces in Nigerian cinema.
Jacobs was particularly prominent in the development of Nigeria’s film industry, appearing in numerous Nollywood productions and earning widespread recognition for his commanding performances. He also received major honours during his career, including the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) national honour in 2011.
He was married to fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. The couple became one of the most recognised partnerships in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Jacobs’ death comes just two months after his 84th birthday. In July, Silva had publicly celebrated his birthday, describing him as “the Lion of Lufodo” and expressing gratitude for his life.
He is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, children and grandchildren.
