The 19th Multiple District 404 Nigeria Convention of Lions Clubs International has commenced in Asaba with a strong call for unity, humanitarian service and collective action to address growing social and economic challenges across communities.
Speaking during a press briefing at the opening of the three-day convention tagged “Asaba Amaka 2026,” the Multiple Council Chairperson, Lion (Dr.) Ibrahim ‘Jide Bello, said the gathering was focused on strengthening service delivery and building stronger connections among people through compassion and leadership.
Addressing journalists, Bello noted that the convention’s theme, “Building Bridges Through Service and Unity,” aligns with the international presidential theme, “Lead to Serve, Serve to Lead,” emphasizing the importance of leadership rooted in service to humanity.

He described the convention as a timely intervention in a world facing economic hardship, social instability, health concerns and environmental challenges, stressing that humanitarian organizations must continue to bridge divides through empathy, support and understanding.
According to him, Lions and Leos across Nigeria have continued to record significant achievements through impactful humanitarian interventions targeted at vulnerable communities. He listed major areas of impact to include vision care and blindness prevention, hunger relief, youth empowerment, diabetes awareness, mental health support, environmental sustainability, childhood cancer interventions, reading action programmes and capacity-building initiatives.
Bello explained that these projects have transformed lives across districts and strengthened collaboration between communities, stakeholders and government institutions.
“These programmes are not just service projects; they are bridges of hope, unity and lasting change,” he stated, adding that the interventions have continued to support underserved populations while contributing to long-term development goals.
One of the major highlights of the convention is the Pediatric Cancer Support Initiative tagged “Hope for Little Heroes,” a partnership between the Lions organization and Wema Bank. The initiative includes the donation of medical equipment to the pediatric cancer unit of the Asaba Specialist Hospital, free medical support for children battling cancer and increased awareness campaigns on pediatric cancer care.
The Council Chairperson said the initiative demonstrates the power of partnerships and collective responsibility in addressing healthcare challenges affecting children and families.
He further assured that the organization would continue to strengthen membership growth, expand partnerships and improve the capacity of members and community stakeholders in order to tackle humanitarian crises more effectively.
While reflecting on the legacy of Melvin Jones, Bello maintained that the organization remains committed to acts of kindness and selfless service aimed at making the world a better place.
He called on service-minded individuals and organizations to join the movement, noting that the convention would provide opportunities for fellowship, knowledge sharing and impactful community engagement.
The convention is expected to attract Lions leaders, Leos, partners and guests from across Nigeria and beyond, further reinforcing the organization’s commitment to inclusive development and humanitarian service.
