Germany has announced a renewed commitment to supporting Nigeria in its fight against insecurity while also expanding economic and trade relations between the two countries. During an official visit to Abuja, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, to discuss shared priorities, including security, investment, and regional stability.
As part of this commitment, Germany pledged €10 million to assist communities affected by insurgency. The funding will help displaced families return to their homes, rebuild their lives, and support recovery efforts in regions impacted by terrorist activities. The initiative is aimed at improving living conditions and promoting long-term peace and stability.
The discussions also highlighted the growing security concerns across the Sahel region. Both countries acknowledged that the rise in terrorist activities and armed groups in neighboring countries poses a challenge to regional peace, making international cooperation increasingly important.
Beyond security, Germany expressed interest in strengthening its economic relationship with Nigeria. Trade between the two countries has continued to grow, with over 100 German companies currently operating in Nigeria across sectors such as manufacturing, energy, engineering, and technology. Both governments agreed that expanding investment and business opportunities could help create jobs, encourage innovation, and support Nigeria’s economic development.
The meeting reaffirmed the strong diplomatic ties between Germany and Nigeria and underscored both nations’ commitment to working together to address security challenges while promoting sustainable economic growth and prosperity.
