The Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun (Hon.) Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode, FCIA, JP has reintroduced adult education programmes across Udu Local Government Area as part of efforts to reduce illiteracy and promote educational development among residents.
The initiative, which involves the revival of moribund adult education centres across the local government, is aimed at providing educational opportunities for adults who did not have the privilege of formal schooling or were unable to complete their education.
Speaking through the Head of Department of Education, Mrs. Melicent Ishoka, during a meeting with community leaders and representatives held at Sokoh Hall, Udu Council Secretariat, Otor-Udu, on Monday, June 24, 2026, the council Chairman said the decision was prompted by reports from some communities where it was difficult to find up to five persons possessing secondary school certificates.
According to Mrs. Ishoka, the Chairman in his determination to address the challenge of adult illiteracy, earlier approved the revamping of all adult education centres that had remained dormant for years.
She disclosed that the adult education programme will officially commence on July 1, 2026, with 17 teaching centres strategically located across the local government area to ensure easy access for learners.
Mrs. Ishoka urged community leaders to mobilise residents, particularly adults who missed the opportunity of formal education, to take advantage of the programme and improve their literacy and life skills.
She noted that the initiative aligns with the administration’s commitment to human capital development and community empowerment, stressing that education remains a critical tool for social and economic advancement.
Community leaders and stakeholders who attended the meeting commended Olorogun Oyibode for the initiative, describing the revival of adult education as a timely intervention that will help uplift many residents and create more opportunities for personal and community development.
They expressed appreciation to the council chairman for prioritising education and pledged their support towards ensuring the success of the programme in their respective communities.
The reintroduction of adult education is one of several people-oriented programmes being implemented by the Oyibode administration to improve the quality of life of residents and foster sustainable development in Udu Local Government Area.
