The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, has stressed that democracy should be measured not only by the conduct of elections but also by its ability to improve the lives of citizens through good governance and sustainable development.
This was made known In a Democracy Day message released through his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke,
“Democracy is not just an election every four years. It is daily accountability, respect for the rule of law, and service that improves the lives of ordinary citizens,” he said.
The Speaker noted that State Houses of Assembly have a critical role to play because they are the closest level of government to the people. He said lawmakers must continue to make laws that address citizens’ needs, provide effective oversight, and ensure proper representation at the grassroots.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Guwor observed that 33 years after the historic June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and 27 years into the current democratic era, the country’s democracy has grown stronger. However, he stressed that democratic progress must be measured by the impact it has on people’s lives.
Guwor commended Nigerians for their steadfast commitment to democratic ideals and their continued participation in the nation’s political process despite various challenges.
The Speaker also paid tribute to the heroes of democracy whose sacrifices helped secure and sustain democratic rule in the country, urging citizens to preserve the values of unity, justice, and inclusiveness.
He called on Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their commitment to nation-building and work collectively towards a more prosperous and equitable society.
