The Chairman of the Delta State Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Pastor Joseph Otirhue, has commended the Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Council, High Chief Obi Kelvin Ezenyili, for demonstrating genuine love and commitment to the welfare of local government workers.
Otirhue gave the commendation at the commissioning of the newly constructed administrative office complex and access road at the Oshimili South Local Government Secretariat, describing the projects as a clear demonstration of the council chairman’s commitment to creating a conducive working environment for workers and improving grassroots administration.
The Commission Chairman, who was present at the historic event, said the provision of a modern secretariat was not only about physical infrastructure but also about investing in the people who drive local government administration.
He praised Ezenyili for recognising the importance of staff welfare and providing facilities that would enable local government workers to perform their duties more efficiently and effectively.
According to him, workers are the engine room of government at the grassroots, stressing that a comfortable and functional work environment would boost staff morale, productivity and service delivery to the people.
Otirhue also congratulated the council chairman on the successful completion of the projects, noting that the new office complex would provide adequate accommodation for staff and improve the overall efficiency of the council.
He urged the workers occupying the new facilities to reciprocate the gesture by demonstrating professionalism, discipline, dedication and commitment to their duties.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented at the occasion by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Monday Onyeme, also commended the Oshimili South Local Government Council for completing the projects.
Onyeme said the new secretariat complex and access road were important investments in effective grassroots governance, noting that the facilities would provide a more conducive environment for civil servants while improving accessibility to the council headquarters.
Earlier, Ezenyili said the projects formed part of his administration’s commitment to providing durable infrastructure, improving workers’ welfare and enhancing the quality of services available to residents.
Presenting his two-year scorecard, the chairman listed several landmark projects executed by his administration, including the Oko Event Centre, Oko Modern Foodstuff Market, Local Government Plaza at the former Ogbeogonogo Market, the new administrative secretariat complex and an ultra-modern shopping plaza.
He also disclosed the provision of a 150KVA generator for the secretariat, a 500KVA transformer for residents of Ukulele Street, acquisition of three acres of land for a public-private partnership cemetery, and sponsorship of the Oko football competition.
Ezenyili said the council had equally strengthened grassroots security through the emergency security shortcode 7745, provision of Sienna buses and motorcycles to security personnel, and the inauguration of the Oko and Asaba vigilante groups.
He further highlighted the ongoing Phase Two of the council’s digital skills acquisition and empowerment programme across the 11 wards, covering areas such as web development, 3D animation, motion graphics, video and graphic design, digital marketing, artificial intelligence, drone operations and movie production.
The chairman disclosed that 46 free Apple MacBook laptops had been provided to interns, while telecommunications masts were being constructed in Oko and Alao to improve communication connectivity.
Ezenyili stressed that the responsibility of government did not end with the construction of projects, but included ensuring their proper maintenance and effective utilisation.
He therefore appealed to workers, residents and other users of the facilities to protect the infrastructure against vandalism and neglect, while urging personnel at the new secretariat to uphold professionalism, accountability, discipline, integrity and dedication.
The Asagba of Asaba, Obi Professor Chike Edozie, also congratulated Ezenyili, describing the new secretariat as a significant development that would bring government closer to the people and provide accommodation for various government agencies.
He commended the decision to name the complex after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, describing it as recognition of the Governor’s contributions to the development of Delta State.
The commissioning ceremony attracted government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, civil servants, community leaders and residents, with speakers at the event commending Ezenyili for his administration’s infrastructure drive and commitment to the welfare of workers and residents of Oshimili South.
