A woman has been detained by residents of Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State after she allegedly threw her five-year-old disabled child into a river following instructions from a self-proclaimed seer in Benin City.
According to eyewitness, the incident occurred under circumstances that have sparked widespread condemnation and concern among residents. Sources said the woman allegedly believed she was following spiritual instructions given by the seer, who reportedly convinced her that the act would solve certain personal or family problems.
The child’s fate remained unclear at the time of filing this report, while emergency responders and local authorities were said to have launched efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Speaking in one of the videos, the woman said the seer told her that the child was a python in human form and was responsible for her inability to have more children.
The seer allegedly warned that if the child was not eliminated, she would either continue giving birth to children with similar conditions or never become pregnant again.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that an investigation has commenced and assured the public that all those connected to the matter would be questioned. Authorities also appealed for calm while the facts surrounding the case are being established.
