The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and transfer of a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has drawn public concern after the suspect was reportedly shot by the officer while being taken into police custody.
According to a statement issued by the Command, operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun had acted on credible intelligence from members of the public concerning the deceased, who was allegedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Police officers were immediately deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, in what the Command described as a clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedure, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Reacting swiftly to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the immediate arrest of the officer and his transfer from Effurun to the State Headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary procedures.
The Command further disclosed that the officer has since been queried and transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee currently in session for immediate disciplinary action and possible prosecution.
Condemning the incident in strong terms, the Commissioner of Police reiterated the Command’s commitment to the rule of law, respect for human rights, professionalism, accountability and public trust.
“The Command maintains zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct,” the statement said.
CP Oyeniyi also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, assuring them and the public that justice would be served.
He appealed to residents and concerned members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as all necessary steps are being taken to ensure that the officer responsible faces justice.
